If there ever comes a day where we can’t be together,
keep me in your heart….I’ll stay there forever !!
Tony Papic (Anthony Papich)
March 1st 1937 – April 5th 2023
Late afternoon on April 5th, I said my last “see you later alligator” to my Dad & code angel was called on Hummingbird wing at Pinewood LTC
A sheet metal worker by trade, he was very well respected by his coworkers. The younger guys he worked with still talk about what a hard worker he was. It was a trade that he enjoyed, right up to his retirement.
He was a collector of anything, he enjoyed the hunt of finding each and every treasure. An avid collector of antique bottles, he even knew the history of each bottle that he displayed on his shelf. He joined the Lakehead Bottle Club in 1991, and in 2010 was awarded lifetime membership, he was very proud to show off his shiny blue plaque showing this accomplishment.
My Dad found joy in the simpler things in life….his old green GMC truck, in which he put on many miles travelling to his camp on DeCourcey Lake, stopping at all the garden nurseries at the end of the season looking for the last deal of the season…..a good meal consisted of copious amounts of hot Genoa salami, Diet Pepsi, ice cream, cookies, and for desert a fudgesicle or two….reading the newspaper….spending time with his brother Morris looking at old photos and talking history….a good sunset, I would always get a phone call telling me to “look at the sky, it’s so beautiful”…. And of course a good country tune !!
Dad and Impi loved Halloween, their original handcrafted costumes were methodically planned out. Pirates with a sword made from sheet metal, an Arabian Sheik, with his beautiful belly dancer and the last one an English gentleman and his lady….they won many prizes at the dances they loved to attend.
He didn’t buy anything new, as you could always find a good one used, the ladies at the thrift store knew him and his dog Ollie by name. If he found you a special gift from the thrift shop, the price tag would be changed to read Eatons’ and there would be a couple more zeros added to the price….he was thrifty & humorous !!
Brushing & burning out at camp…he enjoyed a good burn even when some of the fires got dangerously huge…there was Dad, rake in hand ready to throw some more tree branches on the fire.
He taught me that anything could be fixed with a PK screw and I mean anything, sheet metal and PK screws were even used in the bodywork on one of Impi’s vehicles. He also had a creative side…together we made candles, resin work, & tie dyed. After retirement he did some furniture refinishing and woodwork, creating the most incredible wooden rocking horses.
Dad had a green thumb, beautiful roses and Clematis grew in his backyard, the most amazing Japanese Maple grew where it really shouldn’t have survived, and the house plants were fed leftover coffee, muffin wrappers and whatever else he threw in the pots. The Pointsettia that sat on his kitchen table was fed anything he didn’t want to eat and thrived being overwatered with coffee, Diet Pepsi and water.
Music was a big part of his life, he even took the time to learn to play the guitar. In the early days he sang in the Vic Arnone Band, and then later in life singing with me during my visits at Pinewood. Every visit we let Alison Krause, Johnny Cash, Waylon, & Willie sing along with us.
We’ve sung our last songs together, but now Dad you can sing our favourite country songs for all the people that you have missed so terribly over the years.
Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
To the staff of Pinewood LTC & Caregivers on Hummingbird…We can’t thank you enough for the care given to my Dad. You are an incredible bunch of caregivers that go above and beyond. Please know, we appreciate you all more than my words can express.
You made us laugh, you made us cry…you will be missed !!
Love Jolene & Victor and Linda & John
