Celebrating Tom’s Life
Thomas Edwin Plestid
March 27, 1936 – January 6, 2024
Thomas Edwin Plestid was born on March 27, 1936 in Arlington, Prince Edward Island to J. Henry Plestid and Mary Deina (Arsenault) Plestid. Tom, affectionately known as Tommy to his family, was one of eight children, leaving his surviving sister Lauretta (Plestid) Burley and pre-deceased by his sister Veronica (Plestid) Finnin and brothers Leonard, Henry, Frank, Ernie and Earle Plestid.
Tom went on to serve 25 years in the Canadian Armed Forces as an aircraft mechanic. English only speaking Tom married purely French speaking Doris (nee Doonan) on July 7, 1956. The marriage was enthusiastically blessed by their uni-lingual families on the basis that it was a Catholic union. It was several years before either understood what the other was saying, thus accounting for three children.
Tom served in the Canadian Armed Forces in Zwiebrucken, Germany, Cold Lake, Alberta, Val D’Or, Quebec and Trenton, Ontario. Once retired from the Canadian Armed Forces, he worked 22 years for Air Canada until his retirement in 2000.
Tom was a lover of Ford trucks, fishing, hunting, good food, a beer, and of course shooting the breeze. He never hesitated to share some of his favourite Tom-isms… that airplane is an illegal…en haut pour penser et en bas pour dancer (upstairs for thinking downstairs for dancing)…….you lie like a rug…have a good trip, see you next fall…on the other hand, he wore a glove (which is a strange one given he only had three fingers on his left hand having lost his ring finger in a work accident). “Lord ‘Tundering’ Jeezus” he will be missed!
Tom spent his 23 years of retirement enjoying the quiet of rural Nova Scotia, the weather wintering in Florida, and always welcomed his family and friends into his homes with warmth, joy and happiness.
Tom is survived by his wife of 67 years Doris and his oldest son Lynn (Sharleen Gibson) and granddaughter Ashley Belhumeur (Marc Belhumeur), grandson Curtis Plestid (Patricia Brunelle) and great grandchildren Joseph, Claire and Aspen, granddaughter Sarah Plestid (Derek Verhulst) and great granddaughter River; his daughter Debra Plestid (David Baxter), granddaughter Katie Plestid (James Grady) and great grandchildren Bridget and Keller, granddaughter Maggie Plestid (Justin Dubroy-Clement); his youngest son Trevor Plestid (Alisha Reilly-Roe, ex-wife Ana Ideias); granddaughter Sophie Ideias, grandson Sam Henry Plestid, and step-granddaughter Sofia.
He is remembered by his extended family; his in-laws Irene and Marcel Lepage in Repentigny, Quebec, Danny and Lise Doonan of Rigaud, Quebec, and numerous nieces and nephews, and of couse many many friends.
A celebration of life for Tom, a veteran, will be generously hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia on Friday, January 12th, 2024 from 2 till 4 pm.
A burial service will be held later in Richmond, Prince Edward Island where he will be buried in the soil on which he was born, near his parents, and looking out to the sea.
We thank the thorough and gentle care of Dr. Robert Bush, Dr. Singh in the Emergency Department, Dr. Ghanem, the incredible nursing staff in the ICU at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre and the paramedics who cared for him.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Coulter’s Funeral Home, 48 Riverside Dr., Tatamagouche.
