The Very Reverend John van Nostrand Wright July 17, 1942 – May 11, 2024 With sadness and a great sense of loss, we announce the sudden passing of a husband, a father, a brother; following complications of heart disease.
Born in Toronto, son of the Rectory, his early life was shaped by Muskoka memories on Lake Joseph; school days in Barrie; at Upper Canada College; Ridley College and Leaside High. Undergraduate life at University of Western Ontario, was followed by a teaching stint at St. Georges College School, before heading to McGill to test his vocation for ministry. A Bachelor of Divinity, was followed by Ordination to the Priesthood in The Anglican Church of Canada. John’s first appointment was as Curate at St. James the Apostle, Montreal and Chaplain at Sir George Williams University. A move to the UK, for a curacy in Guildford; Chaplain at Trinity College School, Port Hope, Ont., before a move back to Montreal as Precentor and Interim Dean for Dean Ronald Shepherd’s sabbatical at Christ Church Cathedral; Rector St. John the Baptist, Pointe Claire, before returning as Rector at St. James the Apostle. Lots of packing during those first 10 years of marriage. In 1986, Archbishop Nutter invited John to apply as Dean of Christ Church Cathedral, Fredericton, where we spent 10 wonderful years filled with The Choir School, Cursillo, Festival of the Arts, and a Royal visit from Prince Charles. In 1996, Bishop Frame invited John to preach at Easter in Victoria, B.C. which led to an appointment as Dean of Christ Church Cathedral, Victoria. A Royal visit by Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip and hosting the Cathedral Deans of North America were highlights of this ministry. Parish life, Music and Team Ministry were hallmarks of John’s life. Following his retirement in 2006, he served as Executive Director of The Anglican Foundation in Toronto, as Rector in the Parish of Blue Rocks, N.S. He has served on the Board of The YMCA in Bridgewater; Sung with an A Cappella Choir; and served as Chaplain to the of The Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem. John was Awarded a DD from King’s College in Halifax. A great honour. John died as a member of the parish where he and Mary were married- St. John’s Lunenburg. He loved his ministry at Blue Rocks, where he spent his last years.
John is survived by Mary Elizabeth (Hastie), wife of 52 years; daughter Joanna Mary; brothers, James Mackenzie Wright(Suzanne), Philip dePencier Wright(Vivian); Sisters, Charlotte Elizabeth Carter(Brian); Katherine Louise Wright; sisters in law, Janet de Saint Sardos,(Jean); and Eleanor Wyand(Harland) and nieces ,nephews.
John, was a man of diverse skills and knowledge and that has set him apart. He is remembered by many for his commanding voice and engaging presence, sincerity and compassion, inclusivity and humanity…and his fun, rebellious side contrasted with a man of principle. Rifles, and sharp shooting to English literature, fast boats and motorcycles to silent meditation, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones to grand opera and sacred music, urban thrust and parry to the silence of Canada’s oceans. John was infinitely appreciative and adaptable. He kept everyone on their toes, but always to their betterment.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy #3, Lunenburg, NS. A memorial service for John’s life will be held at 2;00 p.m. on Friday June 21, 2024 at Cathedral Church of All Saints, Halifax. Donations to St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg, NS or the Anglican Foundation.org/ Indigenous Ministries would be appreciated by the family.
