Arthur passed from this earthly plane on May 31st, 2023 in his 92nd year, succumbing to esophageal cancer after a battle stoically fought.
He was born in Westmount, Quebec on August 26, 1931 to parents Donald MacRae, DDS and Elsie Lilian Jaques (predeceased). He is also predeceased by his wives, Hope Sylvia King and Cheryl Audrey DeFoe.
Arthur is survived by his wife and soulmate, Judith Anne Watkins, and by his children, Daphne (Enrique) Loyola, Iain, Heather (Barry MacMillen) and Duncan (Paulette LaClair), and by eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by his sister Marion Thompson, as well as his stepson, Andrew Watkins Kapsa (Samuel).
He was educated at Ashbury College, Ottawa, McGill University, Montreal (BA and STM), Trinity College, Toronto (STB), and the University of Toronto (MA). He also graduated from the Ontario College of Education and the Canadian Forces Militia Command and Staff Course.
He was ordained deacon in the Church of England in Canada in 1955 and priested in the Anglican Church of Canada in 1956. After a curacy at the Church of St. James the Apostle, Montreal, he founded St. James the Apostle, Brampton and St. Joseph of Nazareth, Bramalea. Later he served in an honorary capacity at St. Patrick’s, Willowdale, the Church of the Redeemer, Toronto, and St. Clement’s Church, Toronto, as an Honorary Assistant in 1990 for 30 years.
He joined the McGill COTC in 1949, serving at Camps Valcartier and Borden and with the 27th Brigade in Germany (the Black Watch Company of the 1st Canadian Highland Battalion). He served with the RCASC School as an instructor and, on ordination, he transferred to the Chaplaincy. In this capacity, he served with the Victoria Rifles, Montreal, the Lorne Scots, Brampton, and the 7th Toronto Regiment, RCA, Toronto. After a spell at Toronto Militia District Headquarters, he became Central Militia District Area Chaplain (P), in charge of the 36 regimental chaplain positions in the province. While chaplain, he was instrumental in having the Regiment become St. Clement’s regimental church.
As a teacher, he taught at Saltfleet District High School, White Oaks Secondary School, Oakville, Jarvis Collegiate, Toronto, and Newtonbrook Secondary School, where he became Head of Extended French (Late Immersion) for the North York Board of Education.
He joined the Association of Translators of Ontario in 1989, becoming certified in French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese into English. He then became President of the Canadian Translators and Interpreters Council. As a sideline, he translated the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer into Papiamentu, a Creole language spoken in Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao.
Memberships: The Province of Quebec Rifle Association; The 7th Toronto RCA Association; The Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario; The American Translators Association; The Canadian Translators; Terminologists and Interpreters Association of Canada; The Retired Teachers of Ontario; Priest, The Anglican Church of Canada; The Royal Canadian Military Institute (Life Member); The Royal Commonwealth Society (Honorary Chaplain); and The Monarchist League of Canada.
Arthur was awarded both the Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals.
With his wife Judith, he sailed around Great Britain three times on the Queen Elizabeth. In recent months, they travelled to Egypt and England.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Arthur’s life will take place on Tuesday, June 6th, 2023 at 10:00am., at St. Clement’s Anglican Church, 70 St. Clement’s Avenue, Toronto, with a reception to follow.
