Obituary of Terry Rudolph Dick
Just 3 days shy of his 71st birthday, Terry passed peacefully to heaven unexpectedly at his lakeside home with his loving wife, Pam Beke, by his side. Predeceased by his father, Rudy and first wife, Becky. Faithful son to Madeline, brother to Brian (Debbie), Jim (Elaine) and Paul (Cheryl) and their families. Cherished father to Kimberly (Richard) and Andrew (Heather) and loving grandfather to Charlotte (10), Sullivan (9), William (8), Neve (7) and Theo (2).
Terry, born and raised in St. Catharines, Ontario, was an original – choosing systems design engineering at Waterloo in the 70’s and driving a VW beetle well past its prime, but in spotless condition. He loved both listening to and making music – be it singing, listening to his records, accordion playing or more recently, learning the alto sax.
Terry met Becky Johnston at youth group in his teens, wooing her over long drives to and from McMaster University as she completed her RN training. They married in 1977 and for 32 years enjoyed the adventure of parenthood, career development, church life and several moves around the Niagara Peninsula. Terry’s dedication to his work was bar none and he finished his career at National Steel Car after stints at both McDonnell Douglas and John Deere. His greatest achievements however, were found in his beloved children, Kimberly and Andrew. Being parents brought him and Becky much pride, boundless joy and a few stresses through the years. Sadly, Terry supported Becky and their family through her 3+ year journey with palliative cancer, saying goodbye too soon in 2009. He welcomed Richard and Heather as his own children and spouses to Kimberly and Andrew and subsequently was delighted to become a grandfather to his five grandchildren. With his grandkids, he shared playfulness and joy and overcame his penchant for a perfect lawn when he created a slip n’ slide that all but destroyed every blade of nearby grass. He will be deeply missed by his grandkids who had recently spent wonderful days at the lake with him and ‘Grandma Pam’ and looked forward to a week at the end of the summer with many treats and lots of adventures.
At the height of the pandemic, Terry finally gave into the prodding of a longtime friend, and went on a blind date with Pam Beke. It was quickly clear to those in his inner circle that he was smitten. Their relationship grew alongside close friends who have continued to nurture each other in a supportive community. In March 2022, Terry and Pam were married at Inn on the Twenty and Pam embraced Terry’s family with great warmth and a joy and love for his kids and grandkids. Together, they bought their dream home on Lower Rideau Lake where they welcomed friends and family with generous hospitality. Terry loved getting to know Pam’s family including her children Abby (Adam), Caleb and Emily (Andrew) and baby Winifred. Their marriage was a blessing to the family and brought 2.5 years of happiness and love to both of them that was woefully cut short far sooner than feels fair.
Terry has always been an active member of his church, acting on the board or helping in Pioneer clubs. Upon moving to Smiths Falls in 2022, he began attending Calvary Bible Church where he and Pam were actively engaged in Bible studies and acts of service such as being a handyman for those in need or volunteering as barista at the local mission coffee shop. Terry has always been described as someone who could talk to anyone. He was often found chatting to sales clerks, wait staff or people waiting in line at the local store, joking with a funny pun or quip. His time volunteering at the Lighthouse Cafe allowed him to hone both his conversation skills and to improve his latte art.
Terry had refined tastes and love of various hobbies. Despite having a critical motorcycle accident in the cherry fields of his childhood home and much to his mother’s dismay, he renewed his love for the open road by buying a motorcycle in 2010. He continued his love for gardening and the pursuit of the perfect lawn in his lakeside home.
He will be sorely missed – as will his deeply personal, sometimes funny, often slapstick and always on-time birthday cards. The family feels grateful to Pam’s extended family, first responders and Perth Hospital ER staff for their compassionate care on Saturday. A memorial service is being planned for September with details to be confirmed at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to support the work of the Lighthouse Cafe (thelighthousecafe.ca) or the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada would be appreciated.
