On December 1, 2024 in her ninety-third year Teresa (Teri) Ackert (nee Poltz) passed away peacefully at Citadel Care Centre, St. Albert.
She was pre-deceased by her husband Donald (2017), a grandson (2022), parents John (1981), Theresa (1974), and siblings Liz (2002), John (1995), Anne (2008) and Joey (2020). She is survived by her children Penny (Jan) Arp, Sue (Don) Batchelor, John (Cheryl) Ackert and Nancy (John) Abrahamson, ten grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.
Teri was the youngest of five children of John and Theresa Poltz who had emigrated from Hungary in 1926, initially settling in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she was born. The family relocated to Kingsville, Ontario where Teresa attended Kingsville High School, and met the love of her life, Donald Ackert of Leamington. She was an outstanding high school athlete and excelled in English. She wrote the graduating class notes in rhyming format – a clever, humorous quip on each of the thirty-one class graduates describing their idiosyncratic personalities.
Because she was only seventeen upon graduation, Teri was ineligible to attend Nursing School as planned, so opted for secretarial studies. Don chose to enlist in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a pilot and they were married in 1952, a union that lasted sixty-five and a half years. They started their family in Grostenquin, France in 1954 (Penny) and Sue in 1955. John (1957) and Nancy (1959) followed in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba.
Teri was a supportive military wife, and devoted mother with their various postings to France, Germany, British Columbia, Colorado Springs, Alabama, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Trenton and Ottawa. She adjusted well to military life with her natural sense of humour and outgoing personality. Proud of her Danube Swabian ancestry, at fifty years old she placed first with a 95% average in a German night class at Trenton High School. Her participation in golf and curling was curtailed in her sixties when she developed serious back problems. Both Don and Teri were consummate bridge players. Teri’s favourite pass time was reading the daily newspaper from cover to cover. In retirement, they spent their winters in Palm Springs, California and chose St. Albert, Alberta as their final home where they were close to Air Force friends and two of their daughters’ families.
A Celebration of Life will be held on February 12, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Albert Funeral Home, 9 Muir Drive, St. Albert, Alberta for family and close friends.
Many thanks to the staff at Citadel Care Centre who were instrumental in making her final months comfortable. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
