Obituary
Terry is survived by his daughter Stevie, his wife Christie, his sister Teresa (Randy) Joblonkay and his brother Rick Sander. Terry was predeceased by his father Wendal, his bother Stephan, his mother Irene, his sister Audrey and his brother Martin.
Born in Castlegar, BC on March 14, 1960, along side his twin sister Teresa. Terry grew up in Genelle, BC enjoying the outdoors, golf, soccer and hockey. His athleticism led him to participate in the BC summer games and provincial championships in both soccer and hockey. Terry moved to Summerland, BC in his early twenties where he worked on countless orchards learning to thin, prune and pick various fruit as well as worked in the construction industry. In the winter, Terry spent countless hours at the arena reffing hockey. Fed up with the politics of hockey, Terry challenged himself to train as a ringette official, where his love for ringette began.
Terry travelled all over BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan for twenty-five years pursuing his goal of becoming a level four official. He reffed U10s all the way up to Open As and he loved every minute of being on the ice. His greatest achievement was reffing a few National Ringette League games and being invited to officiate at the Western Championships. His love of ringette was evident on and off the ice. After moving to Lethbridge, he sat on the board for the Lethbridge ringette Association as the Referee in Chief, sat on province wide officiating committees, officiated games, mentored up and coming refs, evaluated officials, supervised officials at tournaments and provincials, but his greatest achievement was passing on his love of ringette to his daughter, Stevie, when she was four. He loved to watch her play the game and cheer her on from the stands when he wasn’t reffing her!
Terry was a devoted father and family man. In 1993, he met his wife, Christie, through mutual friends at a hockey game. They were married August 14, 2004 in Lethbridge, AB. They just celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary but have been together for 30 years. Stevie was born in 2006and she was his pride and joy. He enjoyed teaching Stevie all kinds of things from sports- soccer, baseball and ringette, to the arts -drawing and painting, to gardening and everything in between. He was a doer and he always had his sidekick, Stevie, right beside him with whatever he was doing! He was a hands on dad right up until he wasn’t able to enjoy those activities any longer.
Terry was a fighter-he fought pancreatic cancer for ten years. He often said “he would tell you how he was feeling but it would sound like complaining” whenever he was asked how he was doing. He went back to work four months after his tumor was removed and began reffing again after taking one season off. He took a handful of medication everyday to fight his ailments. He lived everyday with a smile on his face and humor in his heart. He was quick witted and had a wicked sense of humor to which many a person fell victim. He loved telling stories and usually had everyone in stiches of laughter as he recounted past events. Life with Terry was never dull, he was always busy doing something or hatching a plan to do something. He will be greatly missed! Rest easy Ter- you are finally at PEACE.
An open-house celebration of life/memorial will be held at Terry and Christie’s house, 1231 42 Ave North, Lethbridge, AB on Saturday September 23/23 from 2 to 6pm with a toast to Terry at 6pm around the fire. In lieu of flowers, there is a gofundme page set up for the family if you wish to donate.
