After a life well lived, Ted Panchuk passed away peacefully on Dec 3, 2024 following a short admission to RUH.
Ted was born in Melfort, SK on May 3, 1931 to William and Dora Panchuk. He was the eldest of 3 children and grew up on the family homestead near Brooksby, SK.
As his parents had immigrated alone to Canada, it was in Brooksby that Ted began to make many lifelong connections. Neighbours became like family. He often reminisced about Irvington School and playing left field position on the Brooksby Rockets softball team.
Ted attended dances in neighbouring communities and it was at one of these, he met Elaine Kubin. Elaine was originally from Ridgedale, a town just 12km away. They married July 15, 1961.
As newlyweds they lived in Ridgedale. Ted farmed and Elaine taught school. Shelly and Laurie were born during this time.
In 1967 the family moved to Saskatoon and Ted soon accepted a job at Labatt’s Brewery. During this time Ted took up golfing and curled. He belonged to All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church and attended TYC.
Ted’s work ethic was always very strong but after 27 happy years at Labatt’s and never having a sick day, Ted retired in 1993. Until the last few years as his mobility slowly declined, Ted had the best retirement imaginable. He golfed daily, even getting a hole in one and he learned Duplicate Bridge with Elaine. He also became the Bridge Club’s ‘coffee guy’.
Ted enjoyed meeting friends daily at Market Mall for coffee and he watched more sports and CNN. Ted’s favorite team was always the Leafs and this never wavered. He loved having guests over and sharing a beer or glass of scotch. He loved old time country music.
Ted was very proud of his whole family. He loved attending activities his grandchildren were involved in. Ted and Elaine hosted hundreds of family functions in their home over the years.
There were annual trips to Waskesiu and unforgettable family vacations over the years to Hawaii, California and Mexico.
We will all miss Ted’s loving support, positive outlook, his jokes and teasing.
Ted was predeceased by his parents, an infant brother, sister Mary (John Miazga), brother Andrew (Stephanie and Bill) and his beloved son in law Kevin Hnidy
Ted is survived by his wife of 63yrs, Elaine; daughter Shelly(Cam Murdock), daughter Laurie Hnidy, granddaughter Alexa Hnidy(Seth Pechey), grandson Mitch Hnidy(Jessa Regehr), grandson Zach Murdock(Kate McDaid), nieces and nephews and sister in law Eileen Kubin
Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday Dec 12th at 1pm at Grace Westminster United Church.
Ted regularly donated blood over the years. Family welcomes you to make a blood or money donation to Canadian Blood Services or to a charity of your choice.
