Ted passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 31, 2024 in Brockville, Ontario. Ted is survived by his wife Alison (nee Orr) of 42 years; his daughters Sarah Abbott and Margaret (“Peig”) Abbott; step daughters Jennifer Rylander (Brian) and Kristen Rylander; former wife and his children’s mother Sally Ramsey; brother Roger Abbott (Carmen); sister-in-law Elizabeth (“Libby”) Abbott; goddaughter and niece Linda Ray (Ian), nephew Peter Abbott (Mong Hoa) and niece Kimberly Abbott (Andrew); and step grandchildren Elizabeth Schouten (Ben), Alison Schouten and Timothy Rylander. Ted is predeceased by his father Donald Stafford Abbott, his mother Mona Crabtree Abbott Gad and his elder brother Donald Peter Abbott.
At a very young age, Ted moved from Toronto to Montreal where he grew up and attended Lower Canada College. After graduating from Western Michigan University, he embarked on a career in the pulp and paper industry. Ted later moved to Hudson, Quebec with his young family. In 1989, he moved to Brockville after purchasing James Ross Limited in a partnership that advanced the company’s international reputation. He retired in 2000. Ted was happily active in the Brockville community for 35 years and was a member of the Wall Street United Church. He rang the bells for the Salvation Army’s annual Christmas fundraising drive. He volunteered at the Brockville General Hospital, greeting and assisting visitors at the front desk. He was a longstanding member as a historical re-enactor with the Brockville Infantry Company. About town, Ted was much-loved, personable and giving with his time, friendship and contributions. Across the St. Lawrence River, Ted was a passionate patron, volunteer and member of the Board of Trustees at the Frederic Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg, New York. This relationship inspired him to donate the 13-foot cedar strip canoe he built by hand to the Remington for a fundraiser event.
At home on Halleck’s Road East, Ted loved tending the trees and the trails. From a young age his passion for the outdoors was fed by skiing, swimming, and canoeing at Lac Marois, Quebec. He had a long-time interest in wood-working. In Hudson, he was a member of the old-timer’s hockey team. Ted was an adventurist and lover of nature at heart: canoeing the Nahanni River, hiking peaks and trails, travelling nationally and internationally. He connected with lands, history and people wherever he was. Ted enjoyed current affairs and history, particularly that of World War II. He deeply loved and appreciated Canada as a country. He was an avid collector of inspiring quotations, especially those that reflect positivity and change during life challenges.
Ted touched the hearts of countless people with a graceful, wonderful presence that was generous, congenial, humorous, fun, insightful, and loyal. He always said, “I am a blessed man.” Ted will be deeply missed.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at the Palliative Care Unit at Brockville General Hospital and to Chartwell Wedgewood for their great care and support during Ted’s last days.
Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life for Ted on Sunday, May 5, 2024 at 2:00 pm in the chapel at Irvine Funeral Home, 4 James St. East, Brockville, Ontario. A reception will follow. Interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to the Salvation Army or the Palliative Care Unit at Brockville General Hospital.
