Bill, 97, slipped away peacefully on March 25, 2024, at Scarborough General Hospital in Toronto. He was the loving husband of Addie (Tsuyuki) Kobayashi for 70 years, and father of Lynn (Pat), Norm (Heidi), Peter (Kiran), Jack (Hillary), Mike (Nicole) and Carol “Cass” (Darrell), he was predeceased by Norm and daughters-in-law Heidi and Karen. Bill will be dearly missed by his fourteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and family friends, Carl and Belinda.
Bill was born in 1926 in Langley Prairie, BC, the seventh of eleven children of Tomoaki and Matsu Ida. He grew up in Vancouver. He was predeceased by his siblings Haruko, Yukiye, Aki, Tomi, Phil, Dave, Jack, Ted, Ron, and Shirley.
In 1942 due to the forced uprooting and exile of Japanese Canadians from coastal BC, the family moved to a self-supporting community at Shuswap Lake, BC. Barred from returning to their home, the family moved to Montreal in 1945. Bill and Addie were married in 1954 and moved to Richmond Hill, Ontario, 25 years later.
While the war ended his schooling at grade 8, Bill persevered and earned certifications in engineering drafting, toolmaking and design, and specialized in plastics. He loved his work. Later, as vice-president of product development at Eagle Toys and Coleco, he led the development of Canada’s table top hockey game with innovations which transformed the iconic game.
Bill was a quiet, thoughtful man. After retiring he was never without a book or two, history, and biographies being favourites, and many newspapers. He was president of the Toronto NAJC and a leader during the critical years of the Japanese Canadian redress movement which ended successfully in September 1988.
Thanks to Dr. Ung, the Momiji nursing and support staff and PSWs for their loving care. To Hillary, who travelled from Whitehorse to look after Bill while Addie was hospitalized, special thanks. To the doctors, nurses and staff at Scarborough General, thank you.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Luke’s Church, 39 Green Lane, Thornhill,
Ontario on Monday, April 15, at 11:00 a.m. followed by refreshments. A memorial celebration will take place at Momiji, 3555 Kingston Road on Sunday, June 9, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. We are grateful for the assistance of Morley-Bedford Funeral Services.
Memorial donations may be made to Momiji Healthcare Society and the Greater Toronto Chapter of the NAJC.
