Peacefully in her home on Fairview Road, Elgin, and surrounded by loved ones, Sylvia Gertrude French (nee Embury), passed away on December 16th, 2024 in her eighty-third year. She has joined her beloved late husband Bill on what would have been his birthday, and is survived by her sister, Irene (John) Leggett of Ottawa. Sylvia grew up in Newburgh, Ontario and is predeceased by her brother, Arthur Embury and sister, Dorothy (Nelson) Inwood. Sylvia was an amazing mom to four children – Mary Ellen French (Shawn Cooper), Cynthia (Ian Finlay), William (Pauline) and Pamela, as well as an awesome grandmother to eight grandchildren – Brian (Emily), Claire, Meaghan, Michael, Emily, Morgan, David and Isaac.
Laughter lived in Sylvia’s eyes – she loved to play cards and was exceptionally good at Cribbage and Euchre. Smiles filled her heart that she warmly shared with others and a song was always upon her lips; Sylvia enjoyed playing piano for community events and singing in the choir at Portland United Church for many years.
As per Sylvia’s wishes, her body will be cremated and a time of gathering and sharing will be held at a later date in the basement of Portland United Church. At this time memories and condolences may be shared with the family via the Scotland Funeral Home website. Should you wish to make a donation in Sylvia’s memory, organizations close to her heart were Portland United Church Women and Forfar Community Centre.
The family would like to thank Dr. Laforty, Darlene, Kelci, and Katie of Country Roads Community Health Centre, PSW Sandra Coon, and RPN Candace for the excellent care and compassion shown to mom and our family, especially in mom’s final days. There are many friends and neighbours who supported mom and our family; please know how much we appreciate you.
In our grief, we are forever grateful for the life Mom lived, the love she shared and the lives she touched with her beautiful spirit.
