Parcourez la nécrologie de Susannah Douglas Ketchum nee Cannell July 28 1940 – May 3 résidant dans la province Ontario pour le détail des funérailles.
Susannah died unexpectedly but peacefully on May 3, 2024 at the age of 83, with her family by her side. She is survived and remembered with love by her cherished husband Peter, brother John Cannell (Marcy), daughter Alice Lurie (David), son Ken (Yasaman), and their respective families.
Susannah enjoyed many passions and pursuits, but her family came first. She made countless lists in various notebooks and electronic devices, with the most important list being her grand-children: Richard, Dea, Razmon (who died in 2023), Duncan, Callum and most recently Nico and Sasha. Susannah was also very close with her nephew Douglas and niece Sarah, and she enjoyed many friendships in Toronto, Nares Inlet and around the world. Susannah is gone far too soon, but her influence lives on through all those relationships.
Susannah Cannell, as she was, came to her home on Walmer Road in Toronto at the age of two in 1942, with her mother Alice while her father Douglas was serving overseas in the medical corps during World War II. Transcribing the many letters exchanged by her parents while they were separated by war was one of Susannah’s great joys and she took pleasure in sharing them with family and friends.
“Walmer” as the house is known was the centre of Susannah’s universe for her entire life. She spent a year in Switzerland as a teen, and lived briefly with Peter in Montreal and Vancouver before buying Walmer from her treasured parents to raise her own growing family. Susannah and Peter summered on Georgian Bay and enjoyed adventures in the Caribbean and Europe, but they always returned to Walmer. Susannah was a fixture in the neighborhood, known for her years teaching at Bishop Strachan School, contributing to the community as an avid and active congregant at Grace Church on-the-Hill, and walking relentlessly alongside Peter and a series of family dogs to get her steps in.
A librarian by profession and inclination, Susannah served as chair of the Southern Ontario Library Services Board among other notable personal and professional achievements. Her belief in the Dewey Decimal System lives on in her personal library, which includes the Harry Potter series in three languages, each of which she read in its entirety. Susannah was a fierce defender of the English language, and will undoubtedly have firm recommendations about how to improve the writing of this obituary when we all meet again. Although kind and unfailingly polite, Susannah was highly competitive, especially while playing cribbage and badminton.
Susannah enjoyed many small pleasures, such as a glass of Lagavulin, a square of dark chocolate, a picnic on the rocks, and the “Joy light” as it fell across the neighbouring island to her beloved Sugar Plum. But her greatest pleasure was in doing things for others: giving unbirthday gifts to everyone else on her birthday, planning intricate Easter egg hunts for her grandchildren, conducting pastoral visits, feeding residents at Belmont House, knitting bears for African children, protecting the environment by collecting ALL the reusable bags, and making sure everyone drove safely, no matter their destination. Susannah worked harder in retirement than most people do during their career, and she has earned her rest.
It was important to Susannah not only that other people were safe but also that they were as happy as they might be, and that they always felt included. Accordingly, her e-mails, her letters and her oral histories always included context about who she was to the person reading or hearing the story. Wherever you are now — Susannah, Suze, Mom, Granny, Aunt Susannah, Mrs. Ketchum, Old Cruel — we love you and miss you. We wanted more time with you.
The family is deeply grateful to the staff at the intensive Care Unit at Toronto Western Hospital for their care and kindness during Susannah’s last days.
A memorial service for Susannah will be held on Saturday, June 8th at 2pm at Grace Church on-the-Hill, 300 Lonsdale Avenue, Toronto, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to your local library or the charity of your choice.
