MADILL, Susan Margaret — We are sad to announce the passing of Susan Margaret Madill (née Dobby) at the age of 74 on Thursday August 17, 2023 in Warkworth Ontario.
Susan was born in Sheffield, England to Edward and Shelia Dobby (Née Newall) on January 6th, 1949, the eldest of four children. After crossing the Atlantic in a harrowing journey by ship with her mother, sister Jennifer and brother Richard a four year old, Susan immigrated to Canada in 1953 where she moved with her family to Oshawa, Ontario where her brother Michael was born. Along with many kids growing up in Oshawa, she loved visiting the Oshawa Bakery with her siblings for a sweet treat after church on Sundays. She attended St. Hedwigs elementary school and Paul Dwyer High School, then later Durham College where completed her RNA diploma. As a young adult, Susan loved dressing up and heading out to Zolly’s and The Brock in Lindsay to boogie to disco with her brother Michael.
Susan was kind and caring and was always looking to help others. She spent 10 years working at Whitby Centre for Mental Health where she cared for children with developmental disabilities. Her gentle, calm demeanour had a positive impact on everyone she interacted with. Later, after she moved to Peterborough, she drove dialysis patients to Oshawa so they could receive treatment.
Susan married Ian in the summer of 1972, and in the winter of 1978 Susan moved with her young family to Nunavut where she raised Ryan and Kristian in a beautiful yet harsh environment. After a year and a half she returned to Ontario where Thomas was born. She showed grace and never seemed to tire while she juggled raising her three boys while working as a receptionist at Dr. Karps Dental office in Peterborough.
Susan eventually settled in Cobourg where she worked at Dr. Dobney’s and later Altima Dental where she met her most loyal and best of friends.
In her retirement, she enjoyed working out with her friends, having a lunch at Swiss chalet (quarter chicken dinner, of course), quietly reading near the beach, and spending time with her nine grandchildren, who she adored. She loved Loucks Lake and a lovely house in Hastings where kind friends warmly welcomed her.
After her Peritoneal Cancer diagnosis in 2021, Susan remained positive and cheerful. She always looked on the bright side of life and made the most of her time she had with friends and family. As her disease progressed, Susan was lovingly cared for at home by her family and her dearest friend Mary Lynn.
Susan was a loving mother to Ryan (Karrie), Kristian (Tricia) and Thomas. Beloved Nana to Mackenzie, Logan, Charlie, Amelia, Kinley, Clara, Natalie, Vanessa, and Lillianna. Sadly missed by her brother Michael Dobby (Vivian).
