Susan Knutson Obituary
Susan Knutson
May 31, 1952 – December 4, 2025
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Susan Knutson on December 4th, 2024. She joins her son Niall, brother Dan, nephew Cameron, mother Alice, partner Stephen, and dear friend Sue.
Born in London, Ontario, Susan spent most of her young years in Windsor,Ontario, until the family returned to London, where she attended high school at Lucas Secondary. In her adulthood she called many Ontario communities home, but it was her short time in Nova Scotia, where Niall was born, that solidified Susan’s love of the East, such that she spent much of her life itching to return. She did so in 2017 upon retirement, spending her final seven years in beautiful Miramichi, New Brunswick.
Susan’s infectious energy and enthusiasm meant that she was always active. In high school she played French Horn, did gymnastics, and was a diver, winning the London City Diving Senior Championships. She loved playing games, particularly playing Scrabble with Grandma Paterson. Susan was an avid reader and baker. For many years, she was a proud member of the London Bell Choir. Susan loved being social—playing cards, dominoes, attending and running book clubs, hosting teas, and breaking out the margaritas! She loved to dance more than anything else!
Susan was an animal lover. She spent over a decade with her beloved husky Rex, and the two were later joined by Munchkin. Thank you, Einstein and Tigger, for cheering Susan up in her last few months.
In 1975, Susan graduated from the University of Guelph with her BA in English and went on to earn her Masters of Education from Central Michigan University in 1989. Susan spent her career helping people – working in job placement with the CNIB, Durham College, and Goodwill, and then as a Vocational Specialist for various companies before transitioning to freelance work. Susan was absolutely dedicated to helping people find, keep, and grow in good jobs. Always passionate about volunteering, Susan tutored English, and ran small classes through the London Cross Cultural Learners’ Centre, and was a favoured Weight Watchers leader. In Miramichi, she volunteered at the Hospice Shoppe as well as in several roles with the Miramichi Literacy Council. Susan cherished her years in Miramichi, and the people who welcomed her so lovingly into the community.
Susan is deeply missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her sisters, Judy Flannigan, and Elizabeth Van Wyck; sister-in-law, Suzanne Merriam; brothers-in-law, Kevin Flannigan and Bill Smart; nieces and nephews: Cass (Steve Hobbs) and Spencer Van Wyck; Kori (Jun Tong), Nyan, and Logan Flannigan; and Mea and Aly Van Wyck-Smart.
Thank you to the Palliative Care staff at Miramichi Regional Hospital, personal support worker and friend Carolyn, and cousin Ruth for your outstanding care for Susan in her final weeks. Thank you also to all of Susan’s wonderful friends in Miramichi for your kindness and endless support. With a special thank you to Howie and your loving family for being Susan’s second family.
We love you Sue, and hope you and our loved ones are now playing spades with all. Know that our hearts are broken.
