It is with great sadness, mixed with gratitude for a life well lived, that our family announces the passing of Susan Isabel Edie (nee Godfrey) at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre.
Susan is lovingly remembered by her children Debbie (Elwood), David (Lisa), Earle (Cheryl); grandchildren Devon (Breanna), Alana, Elijah, Maya and Chloe as well as step-grandchildren Brandee (Randy) and Ryan (Sieg); great grandsons Ashton, Luca; sister Lois Carpenter, sister-in-law Eunice Edie and brother-in-law Lyall Allison, many nieces and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by Ken her husband of 60 years, parents Margaret and Clarence, siblings Jean (Francis), Stanley, Charles, brother-in-law Leo Carpenter and grandson baby Noah.
Susan was born at home in the RM of Portage la Prairie during a snow storm and grew up on the farm. She attended Salem School District for Grades 1-9, taking Grade 9 by correspondence. She completed Grades 1 and 2 in one year effectively skipping a grade. She then had to move to Portage la Prairie for Grades 10 to 12 as it was before school buses. She had just turned 17 when she graduated from Portage la Prairie Collegiate. Susan then travelled to Winnipeg for 4 weeks of instruction to be able to teach on permit in a 1 room school and from 1953-1954 taught near Austin. She attended Normal School in Winnipeg the fall of 1954 and graduated June, 1955. She taught at Meadowvale S.D. near Dugald for 1 year and following that in St. James for 1956-1957.
While at Normal School, Susan met the love of her life Ken who was studying agriculture at the University of Manitoba. Ken and Susan were married on August 3, 1957 and moved to the Edie dairy farm near Dugald where they raised their family. Susan taught at Cornwall S.D. close to the farm from 1957-1958 and then stayed home to be a full -time farm wife and mother.
Susan’s teaching and organizing skills were used volunteering at Dugald United Church, as an Explorer and CGIT leader, a Sunday School teacher and Superintendent and on various church committees. She was a leader in the Dugald 4-H Club, a member on the first board of the Dugald Costume Museum, a member of the Dugald Fashion Review and the Springfield Womens’ Institute.
Susan loved gardening and planting shrubs and trees first in the farm yard and later when she and Ken moved to Dugald. Her bounty included asparagus, strawberries and raspberries every year.
Susan supported Ken in all his endeavours to improve agriculture for farmers, including Canola Council of Canada, Manitoba Pool Elevators, Nuffield Scholars Association and hosting farm tours.
Susan was very proud of her children and grandchildren and enjoyed following their all their activities, encouraging their excellence in studies and watching them grow into the compassionate and thoughtful people they are today.
Susan and Ken travelled extensively. Together they visited all of the provinces in this great country, including Yukon and North West Territories. They also visited many US states; England, Scotland, Turkey and many other spots in Europe (one favourite was Portugal).
We would like to thank the staff at Selkirk Regional Health Centre for their kind and compassionate care and also Dr. Shenouda at Kin Place Primary Health Care Centre for his years as Susan’s family doctor.
A celebration of Susan’s life will be held Friday, October 20 at 12:00 PM at Oakbank Baptist Church. There will be a private family interment at Sunnyside Cemetery prior to the service.
Susan supported many worthy causes. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
