Stuart Leroy Greensides Obituary
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” – 2 Timothy 4:7
Stuart Leroy Greensides, affectionately known as “Stu”, passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior on November 22, 2024, at the age of 75, in Strathmore, AB. Stuart lived a full and vibrant life, centered on faith, family, and his love of sports and adventure. Stu was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, great-uncle and friend who left a mark on the hearts of those who knew him.
Stu is survived by his devoted wife of 57 proud years, Helen Greensides; his daughter Charlene Lee and son-in-law Albert Lee; his grandchildren Vanessa and Jordan; his son Shawn Greensides; his grandsons Tyson (and Alexis) and Shawn Stuart; and his great-grandson Justice. He will also be lovingly remembered by his sisters Beryl Robinson, Dona Andreychuk, Sharon Heatcoat (and Wayne), Brenda Hillmer (and Brian), as well as his sister-in-laws Judy Greensides and Sharon Thompson, and his many nieces and nephews. Stu was predeceased by his parents Ivan and Doreen Greensides, his stepfather Con Yorga, his brothers Marv Greensides (and Doreen), Bob Greensides (and Gladys), Don Greensides, and Terry Greensides, and his sisters Alice Peterson (and Alvin), Hazel Hannah (and Jim), and his nephew Rob Greensides.
Stu’s early education took place in his hometown of Assiniboia, SK. He later acquired his Class 1A driver’s license and completed various courses including First Aid and Dangerous Goods. An entrepreneur at heart, Stu was the owner/operator of the Prairie View Esso restaurant and service station, and later the Bar-B restaurant and lounge. Throughout his career, he mastered many service industry positions with companies such as Monarch Messenger, Acklands Grainger, R & G Transport, Spie Pipeline, Dave Mihalicz Excavating, Alvin Karst Construction, Crown Tire, and Firestone.
Travel and adventure were among Stu’s passions, journeying to destinations like Cuba, Jamaica, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Nashville, Hawaii, and the Northwest Territories. Yet, he found equal joy in the simple pleasures of family backyard barbecues, playing cribbage, camping trips, and leisurely rides around Strathmore, once on his bike and then on his scooter. Stu always greeted visitors with a warm, “How’s your car runnin’?” and he’d make sure it was in better shape than when they arrived.
A true sports fanatic, he was an unwavering fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. His commitment to sports also shone through his community involvement. Stu was a proud member of the Assiniboia Kinsmen Club, served as a coach for
Assiniboia Minor Hockey and protected the net as a goalie in men’s league hockey. He organized the family hockey draft, played backyard grass hockey with his grandchildren, and enjoyed golfing in Montana with the Ragamuffins. Stu enjoyed doing many activities with his favourite people: ski-dooing, water skiing, cherished moments with friends in his garage, often over a shared drink with his favorite tunes and a lot of laughs.
At home, Stuart delighted in tending to his yard and deck, especially watching his sunflowers peek over the top of the fence. He was known as the “supervisor of many things” and could always be found ensuring everything ran smoothly, whether at work or during family gatherings. Stu’s loving, kind, and spirited nature made him the heartbeat at every gathering.
As Helen Keller once said, «What we have once enjoyed we can never lose; all that we love deeply becomes a part of us.» Stu’s legacy of love and joy will continue to live on through his family and the many lives he touched.
Stu’s life was one of meaningful connections, enduring friendships, and heartfelt contributions to his community. His memory will be cherished and his presence deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
“Not good-bye, but see you later” he would say; and in the meantime, “GO LEAFS GO”.
