Obituary
PIPPY, Steven Nicholas, age 63, of Shelburne, Nova Scotia passed away in Queens General Hospital on Wednesday, March 13, 2024. Born in Landstuhl, Germany on September 13, 1960, he was the son of Nicholas and Elizabeth (Dunn) Pippy of Shelburne, Nova Scotia. Steven was a graduate of Shelburne Regional High School 1978, Acadia University 1982 (Bachelor of Science, Physical Education) where he was proud to be a Willett boy, and St. Francis Xavier University 2001 (Masters in Education Administration). Immediately upon completion of his degree from Acadia in 1982, Steven began a very rich and rewarding career in education beginning as a physical education teacher at Shelburne Regional High School. He eventually transitioned into Guidance Counselling before becoming Vice Principal and then Principal of Hillcrest Academy. He served one year as Principal of the Lockeport Family of Schools, a year he calls his most enjoyable school year in his career. His career in education lasted just shy of 32 years after a diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer’s Disease brought it to an abrupt end in 2014. Education was his profession but coaching was his passion. Coach Pippy had a desire to build an athletic program at Shelburne Regional High School that would be recognized province-wide. He had his hand in coaching every school sport during his tenure. The basketball court was where he was most at home. A provincial banner is the ultimate prize in school sport and he has his name attached to five of them beginning with a Senior Girls Division 3 Soccer (1992-93) championship, three Senior Boys Basketball Division 3 (1997-98, 2000-01, 2010-11)championships, and one Senior Boys Basketball Division 2 (2001-02) championship. Though quite animated on the hardwood he had a gentle style of leadership and guidance and he touched the lives of many, many students and colleagues. Steven faced his 10+ year battle with Alzheimer’s with strength and determination, always putting himself out there to make each day worth it. He continued to play his sports, travel extensively, enjoy cottage days, and his favourite thing of catching up with people. Be it at tournaments, festivals, reunions, or anything that brought people together, he was always keen to hear from former students and colleagues what they had been doing. Where the average person would probably have crumbled, Steven continued to show us the way everyday to live each day to its fullest. Always the educator, Steven has donated his body to Dalhousie School of Medicine and his brain to the Maritime Brain Tissue Bank in hopes that someday soon a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease will finally be reached. Leaving to mourn his loss is his wife of 39 years Patricia (Siegel) and their son Brendan Jay Pippy; parents Nicholas and Elizabeth Pippy, Shelburne; sister Andrea (Richard) Fitzgerald, North East Harbour; brothers Michael Pippy, St. John, NB, and Jonathan (Anedra) Pippy, Bridgewater; sister-in-law Mindy Smith (Burton), Dartmouth, brothers-in-law Peter (Carol) Siegel and Ted (Cindy) Siegel, Middle Ohio; several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by maternal grandparents Elizabeth and Alvin Cox and Dr. George Dunn; paternal grandparents Frank and Grace Pippy, parents-in-law Douglas and Geraldine Siegel. No one loved a good gathering more than Steven. We know he wouldn’t want us to wallow alone in our grief, so we are hosting a gathering to rejoice in Steven’s life and to share our memories. We hope you will come and pay your final respects to Steven with us at the Shelburne Community Centre, 63 King Street, Shelburne on Saturday, March 23, 2024, 2:00-4:00. Words of remembrance will take place at 2:30. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Kids Fair Play Fund or the Hillcrest Academy Breakfast Program.
