1939-2024
Stephen John Slovenz,
84, of Wolfville, Nova Scotia died on July 1st in Valley Hospice,
Kentville, from complications of prostate cancer.
Stephen was born on
September 6, 1939, to Stephen and Anita Slovenz and was raised in
Keyport, New Jersey where he attended Keyport High School. He went on
to earn a BSc from Monmouth University and his Master’s
degree from Rutgers University. Stephen was employed by the Middletown
Township Board of Education, where he served as teacher, Department
Supervisor and Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction, Science K-12.
He retired in 1994 and went on to become the principal of The
International School of Grenada in the West Indies. In addition to his
illustrious career in education, Stephen was a member of the United
States Coast Guard Reserves for 31 years. He retired in 1999 as Master
Chief Boatswain Mate. During his career in the Coast Guard, Stephen
received numerous awards including New Jersey Reservist of the Year
and the Achievement medal for Excellence in Small Boat Training. Other
maritime pursuits included a lifelong membership to the Keyport Yacht
Club where he was the past Commodore and served on multiple committees
during his many years there. He was responsible for the institution of
the launch operation and found great pleasure in running the launches.
An avid sailor and skilled woodworker, Stephen immigrated to Nova
Scotia, Canada as a boat builder after working with Hans Mikaitis at
Master Shipwrights in Atlantic Highlands, NJ for many years. Stephen
liked nothing more than sailing his 30″ Nonsuch,
«Evangeline» on Mahone Bay and cocktails aboard her in the
marina with friends. During his retirement in Wolfville, he served on
the Acadia Lifelong Learning Advisory Board, the Executive Board of
the Wolfville and Area Newcomers Club and the Property Committee of
St. John’s Anglican Church in Wolfville. He enjoyed using
his woodworking skills building projects for his friends and his
church. He looked forward to Monday lunches with the
«ROMEOs» (Retired Old Men Eating Out) and
socializing at Charts Cafe in the mornings.
Stephen was
predeceased by his parents and his sister, Sandra Slovenz
Crook.
He is survived by his
loving wife of 35 years, Linda Ellis; his daughter, Kristin Slovenz
Tocci, (Christopher); stepdaughters, Margaret Ellis Stone (Susan
Hughes), Karen Ellis Monahan (Andrew) and Jane Ellis Ratcliffe;
grandchildren, Christopher and Danielle Tocci, Andrew Stone and
Langley Stone McDonough (Sean); his sister, Madeline Slovenz
Brownstone, his cousin Peter VanRixoort (Riina); his nephew, Michael
Crook and niece, Cindy Crook and his cats, «Nosey»
and «Waldo.» Stephen loved living in Nova Scotia and
made a wonderful life in Wolfville with his wife, Linda and their many
amazing friends and neighbours.
A celebration of life
will be held at St. John’s Anglican Church in Wolfville on
July 13th at 2:00 p.m. ADT (1:00 p.m. EDT). It will be live streamed
at youtube.com/live/6RqrT0h4B28. In lieu of traditional
remembrances, Stephen’s family asks with gratitude that
donations be made in his memory to the organizations that were most
important to him, Valley Regional Hospital Foundation Safe Haven
Animal Rescue. Arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family
Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
