Stella Michaud Obituary
Stella Marie Michaud, age 82, passed peacefully at her home on Christmas Eve 2023. (April 30, 1941-December 24, 2023)
Stella was the matriarch of a beautiful family and was the beloved mother of Catherine and Claire, grandmother to Mercedes, Matthew and Riley and partner to David Lewis. She was eagerly anticipating the arrival of her first great granddaughter Maisie, expected in February, 2024.
Adopted and loved by the late Agnes Gleeson and John Costello in the UK, Stella left her home in 1966 and set sail aboard the Empress of Canada from Liverpool to Montreal. What was supposed to be a one year stay in Canada, turned into a new life on a new continent with an impressive teaching career and the creation of a strong network of friends, many of whom became family.
Stella was a longstanding teacher with the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) and advocate for occasional teachers. Working with the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA), she showed her strengths in negotiation, collective bargaining and arbitration. Stella was dedicated to her career and continued to work part time throughout her retirement.
Stella’s teaching qualifications included primary, junior and intermediate divisions within elementary school and she continually added to her credentials with special and religious education certifications. She taught English as a second language; where she was impactful at not only changing people’s lives by empowering them with the English language but helped them personally by donating items to make their life more comfortable in their new country.
Stella was a fierce competitor and enjoyed playing Scrabble, especially with her Grandson Matthew and looked forward to her card nights and cottage getaways with the girls. She found joy in the theatre and loved to circulate the Milton Seniors Centre regularly to play Bridge. In earlier years, she was a globetrotter travelling extensively throughout the world and North America, inspiring her children and grandchildren to do the same.
Stella was an incredibly strong and stoic woman, she was selfless and sacrificed her entire life to raise her two daughters.
Even in her final days, she found it difficult to allow anyone to care for her, in the same way she had always cared for others.
She enriched the lives of those she loved with tradition. Christmas was her favourite holiday; she was well known for baking a wide selection of treats that became synonymous with the holiday season and hosting epic holiday dinners where those who didn’t have family to go to were always welcomed with open arms.
Stella will be missed dearly by family and friends and the community she leaves behind.
A service to celebrate Stella’s life will be held at Holy Rosary Parish at 139 Martin Street in Milton at 11am
on Saturday January 6, 2024 with a gathering to follow. Flowers are welcome and can be sent directly to the church.
