My death occurred peacefully at 2 pm on March 10, 2023, as per my wishes – at my home in Chartwell Anne Hathaway Retirement Residence, Stratford. Predeceased by my wife Audrey Pearl (Bain/1928-2013). We were married on June 25, 1960, and spent 53 wonderful years together. Survived by my son Donald Laird and his wife Joan (Pilar) and granddaughter Elisabeth Ila Dorrance.
I was born on September 22, 1931, the son of Norman Russell (1888-1950) and Ila May (Johnson/1890-1983) Dorrance, at Seaforth, Ontario. I attended public school at SS#4, McKillop and graduated from Seaforth District Highschool. At my father’s suggestion and before his death, he recommended I become a teacher like his siblings; Harold, Veronica and Roy and so I briefly attended Stratford Normal School but realized it was not for me. It was then, I went to HB Beal Technical School in London. I worked first at Towland Construction Co. and then Empire Brass before joining The Department of Highways, Ontario – retiring after 33 years of service working in London and Kenora, where I had met Audrey.
We lived in Burlington and Huntsville throughout our years together. In retirement I worked at Bert French & Son and then 16 seasons in the pro shop at Huntsville Downs Golf Course. I was an avid member of the Muskoka Seniors Club and Muskoka/Parry Sound Genealogy Group before moving to Stratford in recent years, having lived the last five at Chartwell Anne Hathaway Retirement Residence, where I received excellent care.
My cremation is entrusted to Rutherford Cremation & Funeral Services, 804 Ontario Street, Stratford 519-271-5062. My remains along with Audrey’s will be interred in Maitlandbank Cemetery, Seaforth, Ontario.
