After a long and full life Sophie has passed away at the age of 94. She was the youngest of the 11 children born to Katherine and Frederick Turko of the Alonso area.
Born and raised in Portage la Prairie, Sophie often spent time in Alonsa, where her parents originally homesteaded, as she had many relatives and friends there.
After leaving home Sophie lived and worked in Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary and Toronto before settling in Winnipeg. Sophie worked for 31 years for the Hudson’s Bay Co. where she made many lifelong friends. In her younger years Sophie loved to travel, visiting Hawaii, Mexico, Disneyland, Las Vegas and Hollywood.
Although slowly losing her eyesight Sophie remained independent, living in her own apartment with some help until her cancer diagnosis. She then moved to Extendicare Oakview Place where she lived for her last few months.
Sophie will be remembered fondly by many nieces and nephews who have a special place in their hearts for their Aunt Sophie.
Sophie was a very private person. As per her wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral.
As an expression of sympathy donations may be made in Sophie’s memory to Meals on Wheels, 174 Hargrave St., Winnipeg MB, R3C 3N2. Sophie greatly appreciated her lunch deliveries by the volunteers from Meals on Wheels.
