It is with great sadness that we, the family of Simon Gregory MacKinnon, announce his passing on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at the age of 82.
Born in Grand Mira, he was a son of the late Michael “Mickey” and Margaret (Gillis) MacKinnon.
Simon is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Jackie (Swartzack) MacKinnon and their three children, Greg (Natalie), Sydney, Susan (Brad), Texas and Tracey (Donald), Mira. He was a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather to his children, eight granddaughters, Emily (MacKinnon) Whyte, Jenna MacKinnon, Breanna (MacLean) Maxwell, Kaylee, Myra, Cassidy MacLean, Jadyn and Taylor Hanson and four great-grandchildren, Archie and Harriet Whyte, Benjamin Dalrymple, Emerson Maxwell. He always took the time to listen and play with them and adored them all. He is also survived by his brothers, John (Bin), Russell (Lucy), Michael (Patricia) and Rannie (Marla); sister, Ann (Charlie) Rogers; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother, Leo and recently by his twin brother, Hughie.
In his free time, Simon enjoyed playing darts, bowling, square dancing and taking vacations to the Valley, PEI and Texas with family and friends. He loved being outdoors, where he took great pride in his home and yard. You would often see Simon roaming the neighbourhood on one of his many walks, taking the time to stop and talk to his friends and neighbors or lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it.
Simon spent most of his career working as a Stationary Engineer at both St. Rita’s and Cape Breton Regional Hospitals, where he took great pride in his work. His colleagues remember him as a dedicated and hardworking man who always put the needs of others first. Simon will also be remembered for his kind heart, gentle nature, infectious smile and unwavering love for his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
The family would like to extend a thank you to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital staff of 3B and Glace Bay Health Care staff of 4 North for his special care.
Visitation will take place in Sydney Memorial Chapel on Thursday, February 23, 2023 from 4-7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held in St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church on Friday, February 24, 2023, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery
Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
