Obituary
Passed peacefully away in the presence of his loving family, at his home in Goulds, NL, on Saturday, July 15, 2023, Simon James Gibbons, aged 77 years.
He is predeceased by his parents and siblings: Leonard, Ellen (Irwin), Alonzo and Pius.
Simon is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Frances (nee Halleran); four children: Paul (Pennie Spurvey), Stephen (Amanda Daignault), Vincent (Dawn), and Simone (Kenny O’Reilly); six grandchildren: Keleigh, Bria, Cecily, Jack, Ryan and Conor and two great-grandchildren: Parker and John. Also leaving to mourn siblings: Anne (Aiden), Pauline (d. Edward), Adrian (Mary), Gertie (d. Leo), Margie (Tim), Sandra (John) and Martina (Herb), sister-in-law Evelyn Gibbons and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Simon was born to Marie and Alonzo Gibbons on May 13, 1946, at St. Vincent’s, St. Mary’s Bay. Considered to be a bit of a ‘Jack of All’, Simon held credentials in several trades and was former proud member of Local 740. Having worked in various locations across Canada, Simon finished off his career working in Facilities Management at Memorial University, before retiring in 2011.
Never one to turn down a cup of tea or a sweet, Simon was not only a loving husband and caring father, he was also a hard worker and an extremely thoughtful man who would go out of his way to make those he cared for happy. Although often a man of few words, Simon had a wonderful sense of humour and his infectious laugh would echo over the punch line of any joke. Words cannot describe how deeply he will be missed by those who had the honour of knowing him.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place on Saturday, July 22, 2023, starting at 11am, at (location to be announced) with Mass of Christian Burial to be held at 2pm. Burial to follow at St. Vincent’s. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Vincent’s Cemetery Fund, in care of the family.
