Obituary for
Shirley Sangster (McIntosh)
Shirley Sangster (nee McIntosh)
December 8, 1933 – March 22, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that our family announces the peaceful passing, with family at her side, of our Mom/Grandma, Shirley Sangster (McIntosh), at the Golden Manor on Friday March 22, 2024 at the age of 90 years.
Born on December 8, 1933 and raised in Timmins, Shirley married John on September 26, 1953, and they spent almost 70 years together before Dad’s passing in June 2023. Mom will be remembered and missed by her daughters Susan Stortz (Peter Myslywec) of Kitchener and Carol Halt (John Bohdanec) of Timmins. Mom was the best Grandma to Brad Halt (Amanda – deceased 2022), Whitehorse, Yukon and Jeff Halt, Warfield BC. Also predeceased by her son-in-law, Hannu Halt (2009). Mom will be fondly remembered by Zack and Nick Bohdanec and their families. Mom was predeceased by her parents, Herbert and Mary McIntosh, by her brothers Ross (Verle), Murray (Juanita), Allan (Rejeanne) and Gordon McIntosh, and her sisters Norma Mattinen (Archie) and Rita Salamone (Lloyd). Survived by her youngest sister Patsy Newhouse and many nieces and nephews in both the McIntosh and Sangster families. Although Susan, Brad and Jeff did not live close, Mom enjoyed FaceTime and zoom visits, and especially enjoyed seeing her grand-pups virtually.
Mom was an accomplished quilter, and was a founding member of the Timmins Quilters’ Guild. She prided herself on her immaculate and detailed hand quilting, and over the years gifted her beautiful quilts to friends and family members, and to non-profit organizations for fund-raising raffles. She looked forward to getting together with fellow quilters, and loved to help and share her knowledge and tips with the guild members. Over the years Mom participated in quilt block challenges sponsored by the Joseph Schneider Haus in Waterloo, receiving awards and having her blocks chosen a number of times to be included in quilts for major fundraising events. Mom was an excellent bowler in her younger years, with many trophies and plaques in recognition of her skills. Perhaps Mom’s greatest pleasure was caring for her family, home and garden. She was an amazing cook and baker, and enjoyed spending hours in her kitchen and her garden. Grandma loved to knit the boys sweaters when they were young, and always baked a theme cake for special occasions. At this time we would like to thank all of the staff of the Golden Manor, and particularly staff on East 1. Mom and Dad made East 1 their home for 4 years, and the staff truly cared for them with utmost respect and treated them like family. Thanks also to Dr. Julie Auger and Debby Kapias, Nurse Practitioner, for your wonderful care and support.
Respecting Mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no service. Mom will be laid to rest alongside Dad at the Whitney Cemetery in the Spring. A celebration of Mom’s life will be held at a later date. For those wishing to make a donation in Mom’s memory, the Timmins and District Humane Society was dear to her heart. The funeral arrangements have been entrusted with the MIRON-WILSON FUNERAL HOME, Cremation and Reception Centre, 150 Balsam St. S., Timmins.
