A true northern girl, born in Kapuskasing, Ontario but lived most of her youth in Chapleau, Ontario. Born to parents Regina & Harold Edwards, 89 years ago. Shirley came from a sizeable family of 9, 6 brothers and 2 sisters. She sadly outlived 4 of the Edwards boys and 1 sister: Nelson Dennis (1974), Irene Boucher (2011), Gordon (2012), Desi (2016), Ernest (2016). Her remaining siblings Walter (Elliott Lake), Clarence (Bracebridge), Virtue Durocher (Toronto)-the oldest sibling, 95 years, are broken hearted to hear of their youngest sister’s passing.
Life served Shirley two major sources of grief, the loss of her only treasured son Dennis Kyllonen (1963-1978) and the loss of her only beloved grandson Ryan Malewicz (1980-2012).
Shirley was proudest of her favourite daughter, well, her only daughter Carol Malewicz, who gave Shirley her dearest twin granddaughters Kendal Malewicz and Morgan (Scott) McMullan.
She loved the hugs and excitement from her great grandchildren, the 5 year old twins, Roslyn and Clark McMullan.
Shirley’s extended family out west, not to be forgotten; Mathew MacPhee (Rochelle), grandchildren 8 year old twin boys, Daeclan and Darhian and baby Mattie MacPhee.
She held her dearest friends close, the Poolettes, loved her hunny- her husband Jack, her fox fur coat, riding her bicycle everywhere (as she did not drive), she loved a good cold bottle of Labatts Blue, the Blue Jays, partying and dancing anywhere there was music, country music was her “go to jive”, her daily scratch tickets and the blinking lights and sounds of the local casino.
Shirley was a good woman, strong, spirited, opinionated, passionate about life and family and was loved by all who were blessed to have her as a friend.
Her final forever home was Huron Lodge. Special thanks to the Sycamore Wing Staff on the 4th floor, especially PSWs; Brooke, Michelle, Nurse Mary, Matt food services and our closest confident, Mercedes- Social Worker.
Life is well spent when you are loved and cared for.
Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society.
Memorial visiting will be Sunday November 12, from 10:30 am until the time of family eulogies at 11:30 am at Families First, 3260 Dougall Ave., South Windsor, 519-969-5841.
