Shirley Rebecca Cohen Steinberg, beloved wife of Israel Victor Steinberg z’l, devoted mother of Naomi (Al), Shira (Rudie), Laya (Bruce), Elliott (Diana), Elana; grandchildren Marina, Ben, Perry, Adrienne, Elisha, Jonah, Noah, Micah, Orly and Jeremy; twin sister of Seymour; predeceased by siblings, Norman, Blanche, Sylvia, and Marvin. Loving sister-in-law, and aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Shirley was a multi-talented singer, actor, recording artist, athlete, and educator. At the age of five she sang on the The Horn and Hardart Children’s Hour. She performed around New York including an off Broadway production of the Mikado.
She graduated from Brooklyn College with a degree in languages and then worked as a translator at an import/export company. She received a Master of Education from the Jewish Theological Seminary.
While teaching preschool she wrote and recorded three children’s Jewish holiday music albums, which included the song One Morning, known as the Frog Song, still sung at Passover Seders around the world. The song was also turned into a picture book.
Later, she recorded a Jewish folk, traditional and Israeli music album with Merida Sachs, as the Aviva Duo.
In 1970 Shirley moved with Victor and their children to Ottawa. She taught at the Ottawa Modern Jewish School, led the Israella singers for over 20 years, and led Yiddish language workshops.
In her 80s she founded Die Folkspieler, writing, directing, acting and producing Yiddish plays which ran for over a decade. Her boundless energy was contagious. She had a deep curiosity and a thirst for learning throughout her life.
Shirley always had a willing ear, soft shoulder and open heart for those in need. She was the definition of a life well lived, and left a legacy to be proud of. She will be dearly missed.
A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday April 28, at 11am, at the Jewish Community Chapel, 1771 Cuba Avenue, Ottawa. Interment will follow at Jewish Memorial Gardens Osgoode, 6549 Herberts Courners Road, Greely, Ontario.
