JACKSON, Shirley Mary
1936 – 2024
It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Shirley Jackson (nee Roy), at Greater Niagara General Hospital on Saturday January 27, 2024, at the age of 87, after a long time, courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honour her legacy by living their lives to the fullest.
Shirley’s beloved husband, Jack, died in 2016, after 51 years of marriage. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Deb Thompson (Glenn Dorsey) and Jay Jackson (Christina Taylor) and her grandchildren, Mallory Thompson, Jared Jackson, Blake Jackson, Brandon, and Bennett Miller. She will also be missed by nieces and nephews from the Roy and Jackson families and the many friends she made along the way. She was predeceased by her parents, James and Lillian, sister, Gertrude and brothers Pius, Bill, Mike, Lawrence, and Randy and two infant siblings.
Born in Jacquet River, New Brunswick, the youngest of nine children, Shirley lived life on the farm. At the age of 16, she headed west to join family in Niagara Falls, Ontario, where she lived for the rest of her life. Early work life included retail work at M.A. Kent store on Queen Street in Niagara Falls and at the silver factory in Silvertown. Always one to keep busy, after raising her children as a stay-at-home mom, she went back to work at a local greenhouse preparing perennials for sale, until her retirement.
Shirley was a kind soul, a loyal and trusted friend who enjoyed every day of her life. She had many passions over her lifetime including being an avid gardener and crafter. She took great pride in her beautiful, award-winning garden and found joy tending to it and growing vegetables, even in her last years. She was a nature lover and hiked much of the Bruce Trail locally with Jack. In their retirement years, she and Jack enjoyed traveling on the bus with friends, visiting the casinos in Canada and the US. She created dozens of hand sewn quilts which she gifted to family to celebrate special occasions or donated to worthy causes. In her later years, she loved watching the Toronto Blue Jays and longed to see another World Series in her lifetime. She loved playing Scrabble, her daily word searches and tackling 1000-piece puzzles. She finished her last puzzle the day before she died. Despite the health hurdles she faced, they did not define her. Shirley lived her life with kindness, hope and she cherished time with family and friends. She was grateful for each day and brought joy and laughter to those around her. Her family was often the grateful recipient of her homemade cabbage rolls, banana bread, sugar cookies and buckeyes.
We are deeply grateful for the entire team of doctors, nurses, and support staff at Niagara Health (Niagara Falls and St. Catharines site) and Walker Family Cancer Centre, who cared for Shirley with such dedication and compassion over the past 20 years. Our gratitude also goes to the teams at Home and Community Care Services, SE Health, Care Partners and her PSW’s, Judy and Kathy.
Cremation has taken place. Friends and family are invited to MORSE & SON FUNERAL HOME, 5917 Main Street, Niagara Falls on Thursday February 8, 2024 from 6 -8 pm & Friday February 9, 2024 from 10 – 11 am. A funeral service to celebrate her life will follow at 11 am. A private family interment will take place at a later date. Those who wish to are encouraged to make a memorial donation to the Canadian Cancer Society, for Leukemia or Breast Cancer Research or to Niagara Health Foundation – Walker Family Cancer Centre. A life well lived, rest easy, Shirley. Memories, photos, and condolences may be shared at www.morseandson.com
