Shirley Stahl Obituary
Shirley Marie Stahl, 53, of Santa Monica, California, passed away peacefully at her parents’ home in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, on August 17, 2024 after a short battle with Glioblastoma, a brain tumor.
Shirley was born on March 19, 1971 to George and Mary Stahl in Lewistown, Montana, residing at the Ayers Colony in Grass Range, MT for the first five years. In 1976, the family left the Ayers Colony to live and work on a grain farm near Coffee Creek, MT.
In 1977, the family moved to another grain and seed cleaning farm north of Joplin, MT. In 1978, the family moved to Sunburst, MT where Shirley finished grade school and high school. She was chosen to attend the 1987 Montana Delegation 66th 4-H Congress in Chicago, IL. In 1988, she was chosen to go to The People to People American-Chinese Youth Science Exchange. She graduated high school in 1990.
That fall, she started University at Montana Tech in Butte, MT, graduating in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mining Engineering. That same year, she was hired by BHP Copper in Ely, NV, as a Mine Engineer, where she managed a crew of 35. That mine shut down in 1999, then she worked as a mining consultant for a year in Farmington, MI.
In 2000, she decided to go back to school, attending the University of Calgary and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science in 2003. She worked for a year for Convergys in Lethbridge, AB.
In 2004, she moved to Santa Monica, California where her brother and sister-in-law lived and landed a job at Symantec as a Program Manager, working for the company for 20+ years, even when the company was acquired by Broadcom, where she was a Senior Manager of Program Management.
In her home life, she also lived life to the fullest, seeking adventure and valuing experiences. She made friends easily and attracted quality friends of all types, and she always made time for them individually and in groups. She took a genuine interest in people.
She was co-leader of a Girl Scout troop with her sister-in-law, Susan Stahl, which included Herb and Susan’s daughter Dagny.
She met and started dating Tony Donaldson in 2012, starting a loving and lasting relationship that continued her love of adventure, traveling all over. Hiking in Glacier National Park, traveling to Europe, hiking and biking in the Santa Monica mountains, even spontaneous adventures like driving to a new Sprinkles Cupcake vending machine in Beverly Hills at midnight on a whim. She developed a close, special relationship with Tony’s daughter, Emily, treating her as if she was her own daughter.
She is survived by Tony, her parents Mary and George, and her brother Herb and sister-in-law Susan and neice Dagny.
Memorial Services will be held on September 14 at 4:00 at the Sunburst Community Center which is situated at the Sunburst Municipal Building, 104 1st St N, Sunburst MT 59482.
