It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Mae Craswell, peacefully, in her home, with family by her side, on Friday, December 22, 2023.
Shirley was born on June 28, 1936 in Blaine Lake, SK to Thomas and Rachel Parker. Her dad was a United Church minister, and they lived in many small towns across Saskatchewan. Shirley made good friends in each place as evidenced by the Christmas cards she would send and receive each year. Her mom had roots in Bulyea, and eventually they ended up back in the Last Mountain area, in Govan, where she graduated from high school early, having skipped a grade in school.
Shirley attended Teachers’ College in Saskatoon. At the age of 18 she started teaching, and was the last teacher at Southcote School, a Grade 1-8 one-room school west of Strasbourg, where she taught for two years. She met Allan while she was teaching there. They were married on July 27, 1956 and then moved onto the family farm where they lived until they moved to town. Twins Ray and Ron were born in November 1957 and Gerry in April 1963.
Shirley was involved on the farm, driving truck, separating and selling cream, collecting and selling eggs, caring for and butchering chickens and turkeys, growing a huge garden, and canning fruits and vegetables. And cooking! Mom was a great cook and it seemed like she could magically throw a great meal together at the drop of a hat, or rather, at the “drop in” of guests, of which there were always many. Summers on the farm were like running a bed and breakfast, with all sorts of relatives coming for a visit; and mom was always happy to have the visitors (and was not shy about putting them to work too!).
Mom was always active in the community, was an avid curler for many years, and volunteered in many ways, especially with the church and curling club. She spent endless hours in curling rinks, at ball diamonds and gyms, following her kids and grandkids in their endeavours. Mom loved the lake and always took us (and some others) out for swimming lessons. She was truly in her happy place staying in Currie’s lakefront “shack” where she could hear the waves. One of her great passions was working on the Between Long Lake and Last Mountain history book. She also had an extensive collection of family tree information.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Allan Craswell; parents Thomas and Rachel Parker; sister, Marj Parker; and nephews Evan and Bob Lanman and Tom Blakely. She is survived by her children: Ray (Marilyn), Ron (Adele) and Gerry (Karen); grandchildren: Kevin (Melanie) and David; Shanda (Damian) and Courtney (Adrian); Cody (Roberto), Matthew, Sawyer (Lanna), and Annie (Tyrell); and great grandchildren: Alice, Everett, Chloe, Dreyden, Jace, Iyla, Griffin, Emery, Kaebri, Ollie, Eddie, Lynyx and Benson, as well as many nieces and nephews, all of whom brought great joy to Shirley’s life, as she brought joy to theirs.
A service will be held for Shirley at 1:00 pm on Saturday, December 30, 2023 at the Strasbourg United Church. In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make a donation in memory of Shirley can donate to the Last Mountain Pioneer Home Foundation or a charity of their choice.
