Obituary
Shirley passed away peacefully at Nipissing Manor Nursing Care Centre on March 10, 2023, at the age of 87, following a courageous battle with Dementia.
Shirley was the beloved mother to Deborah Milroy, Diane (Peter) Blastorah, William Blumsom Jr. (Paulette Hebert) and Michelle Heise (Aaron Blackmore) all of Powassan.
She was the cherished “MISSY, NANA, NANNY” to 7 grandchildren, Lisa (Chris) of Powassan, Geoff (Tina) of Owen Sound, Sean (Natalie) of Powassan, Brandon (Emilie) of Niagara Falls, Haden of Powassan, and Caitie & Emily both of North Bay.
She was loved and forever in their hearts as “MISSY or GG” by 6 great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Carter, Tyler, Jacob, Charlotte, and Cohen.
She will be lovingly remembered by her sister-in-law Verna (Russ) Dart and many nieces and nephews.
Shirley was pre-deceased by her parents George James Dart and Daisy (nee Stoyle) Dart, brothers George (Marg) and Russ Dart.
Shirley will be greatly missed by family, many friends, and the Nursing Staff at Nipissing Manor. Mom touched the lives of everyone that knew her. Her home was a safe haven for many people over the years, her door was always open, her fridge was always full, and she was always ready to listen to anything you wanted to talk about.
She started as a Bell Operator in her teenage years, then became a “Mom” x 4, she tried her hand at being a Landlady, a Kitchen Aide at Nipissing Manor, and a co-owner of the Powassan Pop Shoppe all before realizing that her “Superpower” was being an awesome homemaker. She not only raised her own family, but many of yours. Mom opened her door and her heart to many of your children that she would nurture and love while you worked and earned a living for your family.
Shirley also found time to give to her community and was a volunteer at the Powassan Food Bank (many moons ago) and helped at the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 453 with their dinners & dances.
Through Mom (Shirley) her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and work kids learned an appreciation for the fact that you just could not beat her in Yahtzee. They were taught the value of laughter, dancing to old music, being silly, playing games fairly, always saving room for dessert (even if it meant not eating all your dinner), small gifts that were sometimes earned but more often given, and the ability to find “something good” in just about every corner of your life.
Shirley loved to crochet doilies. She had a box full all the time, in every colour imaginable and if you dared to say you liked one, you would end up leaving with at least one pair (if not more).
Most of all Shirley treasured her time spent playing Scrabble with her “Best Friend” Iris Loxton. Iris wasn’t just her best friend though, she was her “Earth Angel” and meant the very world to Mom.
These words were written by Caitie but hold true for all of us.
“Dementia is a cruel house guest. It forces its way in, showing no mercy to the person or memories that have built a home there, but even in the end, it never once took your heart or your laugh or your spirit.”
As per Shirley’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Interment & a Celebration of Life will follow in late spring.
Donations can be made to Powassan Wesleyan Church-Women’s Group, Nipissing Manor Nursing Care Centre–Life Enrichment program, or a charity of your choice.
