Shirley Marjorie (Meath) Gleeson, born September 9, 1931, passed peacefully at Ross Memorial Hospital on January 25, 2024, surrounded by love. She is joyfully reunited with her husband, Allan Joseph Gleeson, her parents, John Arthur and Dorothy Winifred Meath, her beloved daughter-in-law Sarah, and her many friends gone before her. We know she is also peeking in on little Hannah.
Born in Toronto, Mom moved to Peterborough at a young age. She attended Prince of Wales Elementary School and grade nine at PCVI; a family move to Lindsay meant completing the remainder of her high school years at LCI. Mom played high school basketball and developed life-long friendships with her high school mates, especially Dianne (Jardine) Davis. Mom was a graduate of Baker’s Business College in Lindsay and enjoyed an early career at the Lindsay Watchman-Warder newspaper. Married April 24, 1954, Mom shared a happy marriage of 58 years to Allan Joseph (2012), creating a home filled with love and laughter. Shirley was a proud mother to Susan (Bruce Evans), John (Sarah, 2022), Jane (David Marshall) and Kate (Ken Imrie) – in Mom’s own words, her four greatest accomplishments. Grandmother to ten, “GG” to eight, aunt and great aunt (“FA”) to a wonderful group of treasured nieces and nephews; Mom never failed to remember everyone’s birthday, every year! Mom also leaves behind her dearly loved brother, Bill Meath, and his wife, Kay. Shirley was also an honorary grandmother to the Webb family.
For many years, Mom regularly entertained groups of 20 or more at family dinners in her home at 27 Elgin. She was an incredible host, always making every guest feel special and welcomed – a gift inherited from her own mother. Mom supported Dad throughout his successful career, while also working part-time as a medical secretary and volunteering for years at the Lindsay Art Gallery as its Treasurer. A talented artist, Mom enjoyed painting with her mother every Wednesday at the farm. She loved watercolours best, but also dabbled in oils, pen and ink, and participated in many workshops. An avid golfer and curler, Mom also enjoyed her own original Bridge Club, Duplicate Bridge, and later Marathon Bridge, valuing all the fabulous friendships she made through her many hobbies and clubs. After Dad’s passing, she moved to the Heritage Condos where she met another amazing group of people with whom she created more cherished memories.
Mom enjoyed the company of many, but equally enjoyed her own. She was a voracious reader, always staying current on world affairs and forever keeping us engaged in scintillating conversation. From her regular attendance at Academy Theatre shows, to her daily completion of the cryptic crossword in The Globe, Mom’s days were undoubtedly full. She corresponded regularly with family and friends by email, managed her own online banking, and lived independently, even in her 93rd year.
Mom will be missed beyond words, but we take comfort knowing she is with Dad again, playing lots of cards and Scrabble – perhaps even enjoying her signature dark rum and water!
In keeping with Mom’s wishes, please join us at Celebrations in Lindsay (35 Lindsay St N) on Sunday, February 4th for an informal gathering from 2:00 – 4:00 pm, with a few words of remembrance and song at 3:00 pm. If you are able, Mom would appreciate your support of Lindsay’s FLATO Academy Theatre or the Kawartha Art Gallery.
