Our hearts are saddened to announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Shirley on December 28, 2023.
On November 15, 1936 Mary and Luke Burtnyk were blessed with the birth of twins; Shirley and Adeline. They were the youngest of 11 siblings.
Shirley attended school in the Loon Lake district. She completed her education in Inglis, MB, where her parents operated the local hotel. Shirley and Adeline would often help out with chores in the hotel when not attending classes. Shirley also worked at Wally McKenzie’s Solo store in Inglis.
As a young woman Shirley decided to venture into Winnipeg where, for a few years, she worked as a cashier at Safeway. The city life was not for her, and she moved back out to the country.
Once Shirley’s parents retired, they moved back to their hometown of Ethelbert, MB. Shirley, being the kind and gentle soul that she was, moved to Ethelbert to become the full-time caregiver of her parents until their passing. As well, Shirley became the caregiver to her brother Johnny until his passing.
In her early years Shirley and a friend travelled to both Europe and Hawaii. Later, she and brother John spent a couple of wonderful weeks visiting brother Paul in Sudbury.
Shirley was a lover of all animals. She did not discriminate. Whether it was a dog, cat or skunk, she loved all of God’s creatures. One of her dreams was to become a veterinarian and she would have excelled at that. She loved the outdoors and would literally walk for miles every day (something she continued while she was a resident at the care home).
Shirley spent her life giving of herself while asking for nothing in return. She enjoyed a peaceful life being surrounded by family, caring for others and enjoying nature. Even when her mind was failing, you would show up to visit her at the care home and she would immediately ask «would you like a cup of coffee?». Her huge, kind, and warm heart carried on until the very end.
To know Shirley was to love her, there is no doubt about it. And, for those of us who were lucky to have had her in our lives, we are extremely grateful.
Shirley was predeceased by her parents Luke and Mary Burtnyk; Brothers Paul (Helen), Steve (Anne) and Johnny; sisters Emily (Nick), Anne (Eddie), Nell (Don), Mary (John), Jean (George); Brother-in-law George Gorlick, Robert Jackson; niece Dorothy Henderson and nephew Wayne Jackson.
Shirley is survived by sisters Alice Gorlick of Yorkton, SK, and Adeline Jackson of Russell, MB, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Due to health issues, Shirley spent her final years at the Personal Care Home in Russell, MB. Special thanks go out to the doctor’s, nurses and staff for the excellent care she received.
We have lost our sweet Shirley but once again, Heaven has gained another angel.
A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
