Obituary
BIGFORD, Shirley Evelyn nee Sweet…passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Trenton Memorial Hospital, on Saturday October 7th, 2023. Shirley is predeceased by her husband of 61 years, William «Bill» Loyd Bigford. Cherished mother of her sons, the late Thomas Bigford, the late William «Billy» Bigford and her daughters Brenda DeMille (Donald) and Mary Jane Bowman (John deceased). She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Evelyn Wagar (Dave Milne), Diane Zech (Luke), Amanda Arends (Ron deceased), David DeMille (Andrea), Dawn Stone (Eric) and her great grandchildren; Josh, Diane, Logan, Jenny, Amber, Nick, Aurora, Owen, Trent, Cooper, Eli, Devon, Addison, Rudy, Lara, and Travis. Shirley is survived by her siblings; Jim Sweet, Linda Sweet, Bonnie Johnson (Larry), Janice Anderson, Larry Sweet and Gary Sweet. She is predeceased by her parents Calvin & Ruth Sweet and her siblings; William Sweet, Anne Webb, Laura Johnson, Marlene Coats, Bernard Sweet, Fred Sweet, Wayne Sweet, Bob Sweet, Debbie Sweet, Paula Sweet and Doreen Bandy. She will be fondly remembered by her many family members and friends.
Together with Bill, Shirley owned and operated Bigford Building Products, Bigford Mini Storage and Bigford Farms. She went to school till grade 5 at which time she left to help care for her siblings and work on the family farm. She would read her children’s school books, and any newspapers she could find to educate herself. She was obsessed with British royalty, loved traveling on cruise ships and was an avid hunter, fisher and conservationist who insisted on planting 2 trees for every 1 tree that was cut. She found remarkable satisfaction in giving back to her community and was awarded the 2009 TMH Foundation Philanthropist of the Year award and the Paul Harris Award from Rotary International for significant contributions to help eradicate polio worldwide. She was a life member of Rotary International Inner Wheel and Past Grand Master of Rebecca Lodge – Brighton. She never gave up on anything or anyone and would push her family to go for whatever it was they loved.
There will be a celebration of life held at 514 Bigford Rd., Quinte West (Cottages on Wheels) on Saturday October 21st, 2023 from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm.
