Shirley Anne McNutt– 87, Truro, formerly of Shortts
Lake, passed away peacefully with family by her side, on Tuesday
evening, December 19, 2023, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre,
Truro. Born in Lockeport, she was a daughter of the late Burnley and
Aleda (Dunlop) West.
Shirley was born in Lockeport and moved to Yarmouth at the
age of five. She graduated from Yarmouth Memorial High School, and
then went on to take a secretarial and accounting course. Upon
graduation her first job was with the T. Eaton Company in Moncton, New
Brunswick. After a year in Moncton she moved to Halifax and obtained a
steno job with Maritime Life Assurance Company on Spring Garden Road.
After a few years she took a position with the Federal Government with
the accounting department at the dockyard. It was during this time she
met her husband to be, James «Jim». They dated for four
months, became engaged and four months later were married in
Rockingham United Church. As she has said, «it was the love of
the century». They were a week shy of their
67th wedding anniversary when Jim passed away
last month.
After raising their three sons she went back to work for 22
more years as a secretary with the Truro office of Department of
Natural Resources and Renewables (formerly Lands and Forests). Shirley
enjoyed a lengthy retirement with Jim, living at Shortts Lake,
travelling with friends to Europe and throughout the United States,
and wintering in Barbados. In later years they enjoyed RVing on the
Brule Shore and at their son, Bruce’s Ocean Breeze RV Park
in Marshville. Like her mother, Shirley enjoyed baking for her family
and was well known for her delicious cookies, cakes and pies
– her homemade butterscotch and apple pies were family
favorites. Shirley was very creative too and really loved all sorts of
crafts – sewing, quilting, tole painting, cross-stitching,
crocheting, and in later years rug-hooking. As a proud member of
Colchester Heritage Rug Hooking group, she spent many an afternoon
chatting and «hooking» with the other members and made many
beautiful items that her family now gets to enjoy. Shirley and her
husband were members of Colchester Scottish Society, as well as
long-time members of the United Churches in Truro and
Brookfield.
Shirley is survived by her sons, Gregory (Karen), Cole
Harbour; Bruce (Cathy), Truro; Terry (Melanie), Elmsdale;
grandchildren, James, Jenna, Jason, Christine (Lindsay), Caitlyn
(Andrew), Matthew (Joni), Michael, Colton (Ocean); great
grandchildren, Olivia, Sophia, Max, Aurora; brother, Gordon (Tacie)
West; sisters, Thelma (Murray) Burt, Lynda (Bob) Smyth; sister-in-law,
Embyle West, Ontario; several nieces and nephews. Along with her
parents, she was predeceased by her husband, James (Jim) A. McNutt;
brother, Roger West.
The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and other
health care professionals at Colchester East Hants Health Centre in
Truro for their wonderful care, especially the past few
weeks.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall –
