Peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, Shirley Anne Phillips, wife of the late William T. Bradley, Lloyd J. Ayers and Dr. T. Donald Gagnon, the father of her three children. Predeceased by her mother, Hilda Phillips (Eriksen), her father, Frederick Phillips, and her sister, Carol Demers.
Shirley was born in Montreal and grew up in NDG where she attended West Hill High School. She completed her BA at Concordia University in 1981, while working full time and raising a family. She moved to Edmonton shortly after graduation, where she began her career with the Canadian Red Cross Society. She transferred to Ottawa to become Executive Director of the Ottawa Branch and finished her career with the Red Cross in the National Office in Toronto.
Shirley was awarded a Governor General’s 125th Anniversary Medal in 1990 for her work in helping to establish The Canadian Hard of Hearing Association head office and provincial offices in the late 80’s. She was the association’s first executive director.
Shirley then worked in real estate for sixteen years . She in the Ottawa Area. She retired in July of 2007.
She was active in Kiwanis International for many years, having served as Lieutenant Governor of a division in 2006-2007, and was Distingu ished President of her home club, Bytown, in 2003-2004.
Shirley is survived by her children, Glenn Gagnon (Karri-Lee Grant), Gail Gagnon (Greg Haney) and Jeffrey Gagnon (Tamara Singh), as well as her
grandchildren Matthew, Bradley, Grant and Grace Gagnon; Julia and Evan Haney, Aisha Gagnon and her great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Anderson Gagnon.
A celebration of her life will take place at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa, Ontario K2P 1A2, on Saturday, May 11 at 11am with visitation on Friday, May 10 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Shirley will be interred with her beloved Don at the Cote des Neiges Cemetery, Montreal, at a later date.
The family would like to thank the staff of The Ottawa General Hospital, 6th floor NW, for their dedication during Mom’s final week of life, especially the kindness and professionalism of Chantal Kloosterman and Adam Colford.
Donations in Shirley’s memory to The Ottawa Hospital Foundation would be gratefully appreciated.
