Obituary of Shirley Ann Kennedy
It is with great sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Shirley Ann Kennedy (nee Kent), in her 93rd year at Port Perry Place on December 24, 2024, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
She will be sadly missed by her children: Debra Giroux (Richard) of Penticton, BC, Teresa McClurg (Dale) of Nestleton, ON, and Mark (Michelle) of Virden, MN, her 9 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, as well as her brothers Donald Kent (the late Yvonne) and sister Marlene Drey (Norm).
Shirley was predeceased by her husbands Owen Kennedy (2015) and Linton Timbers (1959), her parents Rev. E.E. Kent and Miriam Elsie Kent (nee Galley), her sons Rowen Kennedy (2012) and Trevor Kennedy (1981), her sister Miriam Cochrane, and her brothers Ernest Kent (the late Sylvia Kent), and Archie Kent (the late Barbara).
Shirley started out working for CIBC in Toronto, a job she thoroughly enjoyed. After marrying Linton, they relocated to Port Perry where Linton was employed by Sweetman’s Garage as a mechanic. Following Linton’s tragic automobile accident, she purchased a home in Prince Albert and moved there with her three young children. In October 1960, Mom was invited to a Halloween party at her next-door neighbours home where she met and fell in love with a dashing young man, Owen, whom she went on to marry in 1961 and have two additional children. Mom worked for Ken Jackson making butter tarts in first his garage and then onto the Flamingo Pastries plant where she retired after 25 plus years of service. Each week Mom would bring home a dozen butter tarts and never once did she tire of the sweet pastries!
Mom instilled the true meaning of family and love in all of us. She consistently went above and beyond to keep our family close, and always fostered a welcoming and comforting home for us to gather. Mom loved cooking for the gang, swimming and maintaining her numerous flower beds. Each summer, memories were made as Shirley & Owen played host for 25 years to the Kent reunion at their home in Prince Albert. Summer would not be complete for Mom without a trip to the Elvis Presley Festival in Collingwood. Later in life, Shirley and Owen loved to travel in their motor home throughout the States and visits to their children out West. Eventually they spent many memorable winters at their home in Florida up until the time of Owen’s passing.
A special thank you for the care provided by Port Perry Place and Dr. A. Dayal.
The family of Shirley Kennedy will receive friends at the WAGG FUNERAL HOME, 216 Queen Street in Port Perry (905-985-2171) on Tuesday, December 31st from 10 – 11 a.m. A Service to celebrate Shirley’s life will follow at 11 a.m. in the chapel. Interment Pine Grove Cemetery, Prince Albert.
If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Memories, photos and condolences may be left at www.waggfuneralhome.com.
There are special people in our lives who never leave us, even after they are gone.
Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.
