Obituary
Peacefully on November 21, 2023, Sherry Laverne Charles (nee Linklater) passed away at Oakview Place with daughter Ulrika by her side.
Sherry was predeceased by her husband Albert in 2015 and son Ian in 2022.
Sherry will be lovingly remembered and cherished by her daughter Ulrika, only surviving sibling, sister Vivian, grandchildren Josh, Madison, Monica, Brittney, Jayden, Cassey, Cierra and Nevaeh and great-grandchildren Delilah, Xavier and Parker, as well as many nieces, nephews, friends and special cousin Shelley, who Mom was extremely fond of.
Mom was born on Sept 13, 1955 to Margaret and Stuart Linklater and had three other siblings who she is also predeceased by, Linda, Cheryl and Derwyn. Growing up in Victoria Beach and having kidney troubles at an extremely young infant age, Mom wasn’t privileged like most children and didn’t have the opportunity to attend school on a regular basis, but would spend most of her childhood and teenage years sick. She was in and out of hospitals and needed a kidney transplant at the ripe age of 18 years and who sister Linda would be the perfect match. Through mom’s trail of sickness and the many trips to and from the hospital needing dialysis, she did not allow that to prevent the love of her life from entering in at the age 16 (1971). That is when she would meet her future supportive, nurturing and loving husband, Albert. A year and half into dating, Mom and sister Linda would get the call that the operation for transplant would take place on October 11, 1973 (50 years ago), which was obviously better then a match, but truly being granted the ‘gift of life’. A Blessing mom and her family were grateful for… one that never went unnoticed.
Sherry and Albert would then marry eight months after her surgery on June 1, 1974. A year later, their first ‘miracle baby’, a baby boy, Ian would be born on June 3, 1975 and the following on June 7, 1976, she would then give birth to yet another miracle baby and completing the family of four, their baby girl, Ulrika.
Mom and Dad were married for 41 years when Dad lost his four year battle to colon cancer on June 8, 2015. He would fight to see all three milestones met before he would finally succumb to this battle. A loss that was unbearable to mom and as a result, her health would slowly decline over the following years.
A year ago mom ended up in Oakview Place Personal Care Home after suffering from Dementia and a series of serious strokes that left her paralyzed on her left side and confined to a wheelchair and bed. That wasn’t enough, mom would then be diagnosed with bone cancer in the last 3 months of her life, she fought this battle strong and courageously, as she did not go down easy! She fought a good fight and finally ‘let go’ with Ulrika by her side, only to be reunited with her loving companion Albert and son Ian!
Many thanks to all who surrounded her with love in her final days; her grandchildren, her sister Vivian who was with her every day along with daughter Ulrika, her niece (Banana) Lana and a big thank you to all the staff (they know exactly who they are) at Oakview Place for all their hard work, the kindness, compassion and patience they all showed mom right from the beginning when mom wasn’t the easiest to deal with using her ‘colourful language’ (lol) and right to the very end. You were all ‘home’ to her and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for keeping her as comfortable as possible and of course, many thanks to the Kidney Transplant Clinic, especially Dr. Rush for caring for mom during well over the 50+ years… a job so well done that it exceeded any and all expectations, Thank you!
As per her wishes, cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be set at a later date to lay mom, dad and son (brother) to rest.
In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to the Kidney Foundation, Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Cancer Care Foundation!
“Love You Mom/Gam”
