Obituary
Mrs. Sheila Stevenson formerly of Gainsborough passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 17, 2022 at the Red Deer Hospital, Red Deer, AB. at the age of 96, having contracted influenza only days before.
Sheila leaves behind her three children, Fiona Stevenson, Ivan (Delora) Stevenson, Rob (Jody) Stevenson; five grandchildren, Enrique (Chelsea), Celeste (Derryk), Alexander, Cole and Walker; and great-grandson, Radlee.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ronald; parents, Frank and Gertrude; two brothers, Angus and Fergus; as well as several in-laws from the Ronald Stevenson family.
Sheila Mary Marcelle Stevenson (nee McBain) was born in England on 24 June 1926, residing in Hornchurch with her parents Gertrude and Frank, and elder brothers Angus and Fergus.
She was 13 when WWII was declared, and 19 the year it ended. She recalled peeking out of the curtains one night during a blackout, with enemy planes flying toward London. She remembered also once dropping her weekly ration of 1 egg for which she was severely admonished. During summers, she spent time on a farm in Wales.
She attended Nurses’ training at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, the oldest in England, founded in 1123. She graduated as a Registered Nurse, taking her training on the road – by bicycle – as a midwife.
One of myriad RNs to seek employment in the Commonwealth during England’s staggering climb post-War into a new era, her attention was caught by an ad in her nursing journal for RNs in a quiet country village which had a river coursing through it. That river turned out to be the Gainsborough Creek and the quiet country village was where she gained employment at the Gainsborough (later «Union») Hospital, and met the quiet townsfolk, including one Ronald Stevenson, of Scottish descent, marrying and setting up residence with him in 1959.
Ronald built their house, moving it South of town where they resided in the Winlaw Community into which Ronald had been born and raised. Sheila carried out RN duties until having children, returning later to work part time as a Nurse’s Aide for several years.
She was a member for many years on several boards, including the Hospital Auxiliary, Swimming Pool, Theatre, and Library, all for which she shared a keen interest. She loved being on the farm with Ronald, the open air countryside, the animals, especially the horses, riding being a favourite pastime. She enjoyed Ronald’s family, the folk of the Winlaw Community and life in the quiet little village.
Farm life continued until 1991, when Ronald was diagnosed with cancer and they moved into Gainsborough, residing in Ronald’s mother’s house. As did Ronald, Sheila delighted in becoming a grandparent to twins in 1991. Ronald died in 1995; Sheila welcomed three more grandchildren into her life in 1998, 2000, and 2001.
Sheila resided in «the big house» until 2008 when she set up home in the Evergreen Lodge. Friends and neighbours played an especially important role in her life after Ronald’s death, and she expressed many times her gratefulness for the thoughtfulness, kindnesses, and humour of the people of the community at large.
Sheila moved in 2013 – one year ahead of the Flood of 2014. She moved to Alberta, spending time in two facilities. She was grateful for movie time, time outdoors, a ride in the car and visits from loved ones.
A public graveside service for Sheila will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at the Winlaw Cemetery (south of Gainsborough). Following the interment service everyone is welcome to join the family at 2:00 p.m. at the Gainsborough Community Hall for a time of fellowship and refreshments.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that anyone wanting to donate in Sheila’s memory please send their gift to the Winlaw Church, c/o RM of Argyle, Box 120, Gainsborough, SK. S0C 0Z0 or to the Gainsborough Lions Club, Box 330, Gainsborough, SK S0C 0Z0 or donate to their local Salvation Army, SPCA, or Food Bank.
