Obituary
Sheila Mae Harris was born on November 17, 1934, in Kindersley, Saskatchewan, daughter of Herbert and Doris Linfoot. Sheila attended Bradner school, and schools in various other towns and cities across BC, as her father was in the Navy during WW II and stationed off the BC coast. She finished at Yorkton Collegiate. After graduating, she worked as a secretary at Parker and Kline accounting.
She met Gordon Anthony Harris at the lake at Harris point, part of the Harris farm, during the summer of 1953. They married on January 16, 1954, in Regina, Saskatchewan, at St. Mary’s Anglican church. They were blessed with four children: Garry (Lee), David (Lonnie), Trent (Marianne), and Sharon (Jason), 12 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.
Although coming from very different backgrounds, life at the farm began with living with Gordon’s parents and several brothers initially. Their children all participated in 4H and learned the value of hard work. She also thought it important that her children were exposed to the arts, as well as sports. Sheila and Gordon were involved for many years with the Yorkton Fair, with Sheila being the director for some of those. She was also heavily involved in the Anglican church in Yorkton, being on the board at various times. She also enjoyed working with the Yorkton Film Festival for numerous years, and was the executive secretary during the late 70s and 80s for this organization. She obtained her real estate licence later on in life, and sold real estate for many years thereafter. She was a serious Bridge player her whole life, and the entire family participated in curling as well, as they still do to this day.
Gordon and Sheila travelled extensively both locally and abroad, and sometimes took the children with them on these vacations. They also enjoyed entertaining and attending parties alike, often dressing up for the occasion.
Being a survivor, she overcame breast cancer in 1984, travelled for treatments, and just kept on going, including being actively involved with the Canadian Cancer Society. After many productive years, they moved off the farm in 1990 and into Yorkton.
She took an avid interest in family history and served on the Yorkton Historical Society. She was responsible for most of the Harris/Linfoot photos and records. One of her later passions was saving the Yorkton Brick Mill that was slated for demolition, and she spent much time and effort on that until she saw that project come to fruition. The latest project of writing a book also was finished and published just a few years ago… ”Cow, Sow” and Sheila”, describing her life adventures.
After Gordon passed away, she moved to her Jubilee Court duplex, where she resided until her death on June 12, 2023. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, sister Betty, and will be remembered by many friends and family alike.
Memorial service will be held Saturday, June 17, 2023 at 2:00 pm at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Yorkton, SK.
