Sharon Fischer Obituary
With deep sadness and bittersweet feelings of gratitude, the day has come to announce the death of our remarkably brave and spirited Sharon. Sharon Rose Fischer (nee Schwartz, Bowers) departed this life on January 12, 2024, surrounded by her daughters, son-in law, and her two grandchildren. She survived a prolonged journey of medical challenges from a fire resulting in serious burns almost two years ago. Despite defying expectations and surviving various adversities, this time, fortune did not favor her.
Over the past two challenging years since the fire, Sharon displayed unparalleled courage and resilience, surpassing what any person should endure. In her 74 years, she outlived all nine lives. We were gifted with an additional 21 years after she nearly died from severe pneumonia in 2002, which required prolonged life support and an extended hospital stay at St. Paul’s hospital. Despite facing numerous health challenges, she defied the odds with astonishing strength.
Sharon was a hardworking woman with an incredible work ethic, who worked as a cook in many northern camps, Shuswap Lodge, Bowers Funeral Home, The Army Navy and Air Force Veterans Unit in Vernon, and the Vernon Men’s Club. She was also a caregiver for a lucky few, and she took any opportunity she could to cook and bake for others. But her main job was to keep everyone on their toes!
Born on January 2, 1950, in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Sharon grew up in Vernon, with her parents and four siblings. Sharon faced the death of loved ones before her, including her father, Jacob Schwartz, when she was the age of five, her mother, Mary Schwartz, her brother Donald Schwartz, sister Loretta Thorarinson, and her brothers-in-law Bud Thorarinson and Donald Wutzke
She later lived in Salmon Arm and she dedicated her life to her «girls» and her two beloved grandchildren Jasmine and Sam, all of whom are her proudest life achievements.
Sharon leaves behind a void that will be profoundly felt by her daughters, Cappi Bowers (Mike Skubiak) and Nikki Bowers, her cherished grandchildren, Jasmine and Sam Skubiak, her sisters Carol Wutzke and Wendy LeDuke, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and an extended family and friends who held a special place in their hearts for her.
Known by various endearing titles , such as «ma,» «mamma,» «grandma,» “Sharooon,» «Ethel,» and «mammushka,» “auntie”, Sharon’s warm heart, spirited personality, and incredible cooking and baking talents made a lasting impression on anyone who met her.
We would like to give a very special thanks to Dr. Heunis, the staff at Mt. Ida Medical Clinic, all of the hospital teams, and community care for their incredible care for Sharon and her family over the years.
A celebration of Sharon’s life will take place at the Salmon Arm Elk’s Hall on Saturday, 3690 30th Street NE, Salmon Arm January 27th, at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the S.A.F.E Society in Salmon Arm.
