It is with profound sadness that the family of Shannon Hannah announce her passing on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, following a lengthy battle with cancer.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 48 years, Frank; daughters Roxy (Martial) Lemoine and Erin (Steve) Moar; beloved grandsons, Jordan, Maddox, and Jacob. She will also be dearly missed by her siblings, Bonnie (Bob) Leader, Darrell Phillips; sister-in-law Gwen (Lindsay) Matthies and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Shannon was predeceased by her parents, Red and Hazel Phillips: mother and father in-law Wesley and Thelma Hannah; siblings Brian Phillips, Heather Gowler, Daniel Phillips; brother-in-law Frank Gowler and special niece Sheri-Lee Gowler.
Shannon grew up on a farm near High Bluff. She loved when the family took trips and visited cousins. Her favourite playmate was her little brother Darrell. Frank and Shannon met as young adults. Frank says they were soul mates and married in 1974. They lived in Poplar Point for most of their married lives where they raised two daughters. Shannon had boundless pride and close relationships with both her girls. She was a mentor, confidant, ally, and bestie. She knew how to be a true and loyal friend and auntie. From early morning or late night calls, gossip sessions, sleepovers, and shopping trips she always brought laughter and fun. Shannon’s greatest joy were her three grandsons. She always said, “There is no kind of love like a grandmothers love”. When she was with her boys, laughter could be heard throughout the house.
Shannon was crafty and creative, and was talented at sewing, knitting, gardening, and baking. Her baking was an art; many have tried to recreate her bread, buns, cookies, or cakes without success. After losing her sight, Shannon continued to thrive and help others. She created different groups to guide those with vision loss learn to cope and be self-sufficient. She taught herself how to use computer systems when the internet was new to the world, took trips on her own to other provinces, and yoga classes with friends. She went to college in her 40’s and graduated with a counselling degree with honours.
Shannon will be remembered for her amazing strength, resilience, humour, thoughtfulness, and most importantly her love.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff of the Portage General Hospital for their care and compassion.
A celebration of Shannon’s life will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at 11:00 am, at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. Interment will take place at Poplar Point Cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made in Shannon’s memory to Ronald McDonald House Manitoba – 566 Bannatyne Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3A 0G7.
A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com
