Sean Michael Kelly of Calgary, Alberta, passed away on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at the age of 63 years.
Sean was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on June 20, 1959, moving to Calgary, Alberta in 1965. Having lived the majority of his life in Calgary, Sean held close to his heart his Maritime roots and the relatives who remain there.
Sean graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1977. He dedicated 33 years to working at the University of Calgary as a technician in animal and human health sciences/research.
Sean retired at age 55, choosing a very quiet, independent, and selfless lifestyle. He is survived by his father, Kenneth Michael Kelly who was undoubtedly his best friend and most loving confidante. Sean is also survived by one brother and one sister, two nieces and two nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Cecilia “PENNIE” Colgan in 2018.
Those who were in Sean’s life were of extreme importance to him. Sean had friendships long-lasting from school days through retirement. He was blessed to work alongside colleague Billy his entire U of C career (and it’s not been officially determined who had tolerated who!) Sean’s weekly Saturday afternoon “fellowship” was a regular go-to informal gathering and a real testament to what those gents meant to him.
In the words of his sister Lisa: Sean left this world immensely loved and respected for his authenticity, independence, honesty, and incredibly selfless nature. Niece and nephew, Kyle and Kelly-Ann are forever grateful to have had an uncle of his calibre and it is noted that he made a “forever” impact on their lives. Sean set the example to always put those you love before yourself.
There will be no formal service held with respect to Sean’s passing, as per his very clear directive. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
