COWIESON, Sean
It is with great difficulty and tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of Sean Cowieson on Saturday March 2, 2024 at the age of 20 years old, while attending Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario.
Beloved son of Lianne & Brian and cherished brother of Lauren. Grandson of James Cowieson, Carole Aymer, and the late Karen & Gerry Wilson. Nephew to Susan (Eric) Brandow, Michael Wilson, Lisa (Chris) Boughton, Pam (Paul) Mosekjaer, Jim (Laurie McLean) Cowieson, Sandra (the late Lorne) Kastrukoff, Tim Cowieson, and Kevin (Toral) Cowieson. Closeknit cousin to Alex (Lisa) Brandow, Danielle (Andrew) Orford, Michael & the late Morgan Wilson, Jack & Sam Boughton, Grant, Brian & Kevin Mosekjaer, and many other cousins.
Sean grew up in Kanata and attended Katimavik Elementary School continuing on to Earl of March Secondary School. During that time Sean made friends wherever he went. Sean’s first passion was reading, which began at four years of age. He decided to try ringette at age eight and he loved it, playing for many years with the West Ottawa Ringette Association, winning a Bronze medal at the 2019 provincial championships along with the team sportsmanship award. He played one year with the Nepean Ravens and continued playing ringette with the St. Catharine’s Comets this season. Throughout his years playing he made many friends with teammates and coaches.
Music was another love of Sean’s. He loved many genres of music including oldies, alternative/Indie, rock, French rap, pop, folk rock, R&B/soul, jazz, orchestral music, and soundtracks from movies, tv shows and video games. His love of the Beatles took him to Des Moines, Iowa to see Paul McCartney in concert. Sean played clarinet as a member of the school band for six years, travelling to Toronto, Halifax and Banff to perform in band competitions. Many lifelong friends were made in this aspect of Sean’s life as well.
Sean and his sister’s love for rollercoasters took them and his family and friends to Disney World and many other amusement parks throughout the years.
Sean spent time playing video games and especially enjoyed Spider-Man, Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Cuphead on the PS4 and challenging family and friends on the Wii to Mario Kart and Super Mario Bros tournaments. Sean also loved playing Lego Star Wars, Lego Harry Potter and Puzzler World on his Nintendo DS.
Sean and his sister’s passion for movies and tv series was infectious and led to the family gathering together to watch the Harry Potter series, the Marvel Universe movies and shows, everything in the Star Wars Universe, and Looney Tunes cartoons.
The family passion for cheering on the Saskatchewan Roughriders led to Sean playing football for several years.
For the past few summers Sean had spent his free time biking from Kanata to Parliament Hill and back.
From the time Sean was little he loved animals and asked for a dog or cat, to no avail but enjoyed his beta fish Elvis for several years.
Sean had an affinity and love for swimming; as a result, he pursued his National Lifeguard certification. Sean also had an interest in working with youth. These skills would help him at his summer job at Tim Hortons Foundation Camp in Quyon, Quebec for the past two summers. He worked as a camp counsellor and lifeguard demonstrating positivity, dynamism, kindness, openness, and empathy, earning the trust of his campers and colleagues. Sean made a significant impact in the campers’ lives and his colleagues’ lives while working at the camp. He made everyone laugh and feel accepted even in his second language of French. This was beneficial to Sean with his studies at university in St. Catharines. Sean aspired to be a high school French teacher and was pursuing an Honours Bachelor of Arts in French Studies and Bachelor of Education at Brock University for the past three years.
Friends and family are invited to visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue, at Richmond Road, Ottawa on Sunday, March 10, 2024 from 2-4 pm Eastern Daylight Time. Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Monday, March 11, 2024 at 11 am Eastern Daylight Time. A reception will follow.
