Obituary For Sandra Lynn Van Schaick (nee Patterson)
Sandra passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Monday, May 6, 2024, after day surgery, in Edmonton, AB.
We lost one of the dearest, kindest, and best people we could all know. She was ready for anything, always willing to lend a hand and up for any kind of adventures. She had a great sense of humour and an infectious laugh. The family and friends are devastated and in shock. It is hard to believe that such a vivacious, full-of-life person is gone. We have great sorrow, and it is an extremely sad time for all of us. Sandy was well-loved by all who met her, and whose lives she touched.
Sandra was born on September 4, 1964, to Wayne and Paulette, she was a beautiful baby who grew up to be a beautiful lady. Sandra was the oldest of three children, her sister Tracey was born two years later, followed by her brother Todd a year after that.
Sandra went through the Grande Prairie Catholic School System, and graduated Grade 12 from St. Joseph Catholic High School. From there she went to work for Dr. Utas, training with Pat Martin for a year to see if dental assistant was the career path she wanted to follow. It was, and she always thanked Dr. Utas and Pat for her choice. She enrolled in S.A.I.T in Calgary and after graduation, she worked for a dentist in Calgary.
However, her heartstrings pulled her back to Grande Prairie to her family and friends. She met Dwayne Van Schaick, and after a few years of dating, they married on October 20, 1990. They went on to have two boys, Brett born May 13, 1993, followed by Ty on April 11, 1997. Sandra was so very proud of the men her boys had grown up to be. They have both married and given her two grandchildren each, three granddaughters, and one grandson. She truly loved those grandkids!
Sandra was employed by the health unit for 34 years as a dental assistant. She excelled in working with children. When the pandemic hit, she decided it was time to retire. She was very much enjoying her retirement. She loved to golf, go camping, fishing, cooking, and to play cards with her mom and dad. Her whole life she always had a dog, and her latest dog Peanut was her constant companion. She loved to take Peanut for drives.
Most recently she went on an Alaskan Cruise to celebrate her mom and dad’s 60th Wedding Anniversary, as well as her mom’s 80th birthday. She loved that trip so much; she planned another Alaskan Cruise this fall with some friends.
There are many, many stories to tell, and some will be shared in her eulogy.
Her loss will be mourned by her husband Dwayne; son Brett (Elisha), and grandchildren Kadence and Rowan; son Ty (MacKenzie) and grandchildren Wynter and Aubree; parents Wayne and Paulette; sister Tracey and her children Liam and Maggie: brother Todd (Susanne) and their children Jordan and Brady ( Hannah); brother-in-law George (Carol); sister-in-law Linda (Brad); nephew Andrew (Taylor) and great-nephew Jace; aunt Barbara Martineau and aunt Joan Martineau; uncle Bob Patterson (Sherrill); along with many other aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Sandra has had many other family members reach Heaven before her: Grandpa and Grandma Martineau, Grandpa and Grandma Patterson, her great-grandparents, three uncles (Martineau) Lawrence, Albert, and Raoul, and his wife Aunt Marj, aunt Gwen Patterson, her father and mother-in-law Alf and Dorothy, special cousin Darryl McMillin, along with many other family members and friends.
Sandra’s family and friends take consolation in all the calls, emails, texts, cards, flowers, food received, and the general outpouring of love for this amazing lady. Thank you.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 11:00 am, at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Grande Prairie (10404 102 St.).
