GABANY, Sandor (Sandy) – June 20, 1966 – May 19, 2023 passed peacefully in his home.
It was a Holy Thursday, the Easter Vigil. Father Jim Mulligan (Sandy’s favourite) just finished the washing of feet of the alter boys and priest’s assistant when Sandy got up from his seat and moved to the alter leaving the church’s congregation aghast. There he removed Father Jim’s shoes and socks and proceeded to wash the priest’s feet. In one determined gesture our little brother deepened the understanding of the church’s teaching — each of us needs to look after one another. We are/were privileged to have “the Can Man” in our lives. He proved to be more philosophical than one knew – “you gotta wait” was a resounding directive when deeper issues were broached – such as the Maple Leafs bidding for the Stanley Cup. Go Boston Bruins. Go Buffalo Bills. A man of humility, honesty, integrity and love, Sandy — like his parents, helped to bond his family together including his nieces, nephews, his cousins and their families. He enjoyed and was supported by his extended family at Community Living Welland Pelham and one of his closest friends – Carolyn. Sandy was recently predeceased by his father, Alex and mother Claire, brother-in-law Richard Ferguson, and much longer ago, by his brother Christopher. He is survived by his sisters Connie Ferguson, Pamela (and Gary) Vittie, Rebecca (and Miles) Kupila, and brothers Nathan (and Claudia) Gabany, and Peter (and Suzi) Gabany.
Visitation will be held at H. L. Cudney Funeral Home, 241 West Main St., Welland, on Monday, May 22, from 2pm until 6 p.m. with a funeral mass held at the Parish Community of St. Kevin Church on Tuesday, May 23 at 11:00 am. Extend Sandy’s act of caring by picking up a Tim’s Gift Card (Tim Horton’s – his favourite) and passing it along to someone you care about.
