It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce the death of Samantha Heidi Dorko on Saturday, February 25, 2023.
Born February 18, 1979, in Sydney, she was a daughter of Jocelyn (Oxford) Dorko-Giles and the late John Dorko.
Her beautiful smile would instantly light up the room. She loved to laugh and joke, even if the joke was on her. When she loved you, you knew it. She would give you anything she had, and she cared about you with her whole heart.
Samantha was a Cape Bretoner at heart. She loved the outdoors; hiking trails or simply walking her dog. She was always at peace when she was on the beach or near the ocean. Despite her love for the small pleasures and comfort of home in Cape Breton, Samantha always had a flare and a desire to see more of the world. This desire, paired with her ability to care for others and a free spirit, sparked the many adventures she had found herself on over the years.
When she was 19, Samantha visited friends in Calgary. She liked it so much that she cancelled her return flight and stayed. While in Calgary, she pursued an education in Early Childhood Development at Bow Valley College. Upon completion, she worked at the Calgary Montessori School. After her time in Calgary, Samantha started to pursue her next adventure. This time she became involved with Cuso International, a Canadian charity that works worldwide to end poverty. As a Cuso volunteer, Samantha lived in Kingston, Jamaica for eight months and worked in the library running an afterschool program for less privileged children. Besides her training in Early Childhood Education, Samantha took courses in Paralegal Assistant, Office Administration, and Media. She volunteered for Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Loaves and Fishes. In 2014, Samantha graduated from the LPN program at NSCC and began her nursing career. During her schooling, she became involved with Global Medical Brigades. With this organization, Samantha and her classmates spent time in Ghana, Africa providing education and healthcare to families. Samantha loved being a nurse because she genuinely loved caring for people and making them feel special. As a nurse, she worked in acute care, mental health & addictions services, home care, palliative care, at the CBRVCE as a Teacher Assistant and most recently, the Inverary Manor Long Term Care Center in Inverness. Her biggest complaint about being a nurse was always that there was too much paperwork and not enough time to spend with her patients. No matter where she worked or who she cared for the message was always the same, “Samantha was wonderful with those she provided care for…so kind and sweet. Everyone loved her.”
In August of 2009, Samantha became a mother to Allie Jeanne and her life was forever changed. Allie was the center of Samantha’s world. She wanted to show Allie the world and give her all the things she never had. Allie and Samantha spent many hours watching scary movies, exploring abandoned buildings, at the stables for horseback riding lessons, swimming in the pool, sledding and hanging out with the cousins. Whether they were vacationing down south or spending quiet times snuggling at home, Samantha cherished all the times she spent with Allie. Her motto was, “just us forever…she keeps me alive!”
Although her life was cut short, her experiences and impact were huge. Her passing has left an insurmountable void in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved her.
In addition to her mother, Samantha is survived by her daughter, Allie Jeanne Aucoin; sister, Veronica Grosset (Stewart MacDonald), Sydney; nephew, Nathan; nieces, Samantha, Jessica, Ella and Adrianna; and many close lifelong friends.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Stephen and Sheldon “Spanky”.
Visitation will take place in Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday, March 3 from 4-7 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Saturday, March 4 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
