Sam Klimec Obituary
Sam was born in Edmonton September 20th, 1939. He was the last of seven children born to George and Pearl Klimec who immigrated from the Ukraine. Sam had six older sisters – Anne, Marge, Audrey, Kay, Doreen, and Mary, and they homesteaded a quarter of land in Tomahawk, Alberta.
Sam started working with farm equipment at a young age for neighbors before heading to the BC west coast and starting his career operating in the bush. He had a knack for operating all types of machinery, logging , working in the sawmill at Tahsis, carpentry and cat work and did all sorts of odd jobs for the community.
Sam met Mabel Hlookoff through mutual friends in Surrey, BC. They were married in BC on May 4th, 1963 and moved back to Wetaskiwin by the fall.
They rented land and started mixed grain and cattle farming. First son Willie was born in 1964, followed by Sammy in 1970 and Peter in 1973. Sam started his road building career with Eliason Bros. Construction building Hwy2.
In 1970, Sam and Mabel purchased the Bob Crandall farm, and Mabel and the boys continued to farm the homeplace, while Sam worked away.
Sam was employed by Keyano College in 1979 as a heavy equipment instructor and proceeded to build numerous secondary roads from Peace River to south of Brooks. In those 20+ years he developed very close ties with the people he worked with, in fact he would call them family for the college. He then continued to instruct with Portage College and Northwind Construction that led him up to Cambridge Bay and Tuktoyaktuk.
Sam made friends everywhere he traveled. They went to Branson, Alaska, Nashville, Yukon, and numerous visiting back and forth to BC to visit friends and family. He continued driving even after Mabel had passed, most recently on a perogy run to Saskatoon.
Sam was passionate about watching sports, the boys hockey and ball teams and especially when his grandchildren or Jon and Chloe were playing. He was their biggest supporter for 4-H and proudly boasted of their accomplishments.
He was bigger than life, always mischievous, quick with a smile but just as quick to set the record straight.
He will be greatly missed by son Willie and Laverne, and grandchildren Amanda and Matthew; son Sam, grandchildren Avery and Serge, and their mother Alison; son Peter and Kimberly, grandson Reid, and step-grandson Logan; special nephew Michael and Samantha and their children Jonathan and Chloe; as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by his wife Mabel April 24, 2016; all of his sisters and brothers- in-laws; and two good friends, Donny Bjorkland and Robert Matchett.
A Funeral Service will be held at the Ponoka Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 17, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. followed by the Interment Service at Forest Home Cemetery. The Funeral Service will be livestream broadcast – the viewer is located below.
