Ruth’s Obituary
On March 5th, 2023, Ruth Irene Grant-Schweitzer was called home to God’s love, and left the worldly body she lived 93 beautiful years in.
Born on February 28, 1930, in Irish Settlement, NB to Charles and Elva “Gertude” Hopkins, she spent her childhood making memories on the farm with her siblings: Ferne, Effie, Eleanor, William, Helen, Hazel, Ross, and George.
As she moved towards adulthood, she caught the eye of Lloyd Grant of Canterbury and was married within 6 months in 1948. They grew a family of four children, being blessed with two sons; Ross Grant and Calvin (Lois) Grant, and two daughters; Joyce (Byard) Smith and Shirley (Sam) Galloway. Their life was spent on the farm, building the business, being “Aunt Ruthie” to her nieces and nephews, and building their homestead, where she resided until the end.
Known for 3 decades as “Mom,” she inherited the title of “Gram” and was blessed with 6 grandchildren: Crystal (Jean-Michel) Valade, Amy Smith, Chelsey (Jameson) Ferguson, Grant (Tali) Smith, Carie (Michael) Grant and Kaley (Austin) Paul. Predeceased by Lloyd (1985), she spent many Adventures being present in the lives of her family and was always happy to tag along for the ride.
After dedicating her middle-age years to her growing family, she caught the eye of Gene (Arthur Eugene) Schweitzer, and they were married in 1994; where she gained stepson Jim (Marlene) Schweitzer and 5 bonus grandchildren. They traveled the world with her renewed sense of adventure; living the camper life and as a soulful carer, lived in happiness until his death in 2015.
Her love of babies has always been a central part of her life, and she was blessed with her greatest title “Nana”; with 10 great-grandchildren (Liam, Kyalynn, Noah, Alana, Haven, Isabelle, Asa, Harper, Nova, and Olive) who brought her incredible pride. She was often referred to as a ‘baby snatcher’ and couldn’t help but fawn over any child she encountered, despite her family telling her to stay away from strangers’ babies.
Her strength to take on anything and stubborn nature paved the way to driving any vehicle she could get her hands on, tackling farm tasks with her matter-of-fact nature and resilience to handle everything life could send her way was unparalleled. Referred to as “nosy,” she wanted to be in the middle of everything always, and in stores was known for touching everything while “just browsing.”
In the warmer months, she could be found outside on the deck covered in baby oil and iodine, in her pool with grandchildren, in the rhubarb patch, and in later years riding her speedy lawn mower with bliss.
She did all things with joy and will be remembered as the incredible matriarch and person that she was. She could always be counted on to share a laugh-until-you-cry moment, share a good meal and always finding space and extra potatoes for more people. Her happiest place was in a kitchen, from making pies to meals; surrounded by anyone who stopped by and gathering the family together at every opportunity. She will live on in the hearts and memories of anyone she loved or encountered because any moment with her was like sunshine on your face.
