Ruth Evelyn (Bechtel) Hess
July 14, 1924 – April 8, 1923
Our mother Ruth Evelyn Hess passed away peacefully in her sleep at the grand age of 98 on Good Friday evening. Such a fitting day for this rite of passage by one who held such a deep faith and for whom the church and all its beliefs were such a vital part of her entire life. Ruth led a life that was centered on caring for others. Together with her husband, Rev. John Hess, they established a new church in the inner city in Toronto, that eventually grew to become the Warden Woods Church and Community Centre. Through this institution they were able to touch the lives of people from all walks of life. Ruth was always vitally interested in the plights of others, and a sequence of close ties were established with the refugee families she and John hosted throughout their lives together. Music was also a vital part of Mom’s life. As children we all remember singing in the youth choir she began in the church in Toronto. Mom had a beautiful voice and she was a member of various choirs throughout her life, but none were more important than the choir at Fairview Mennonite Home, where she spent the last 16 years after the passing of her husband. She was proud to sing the occasional solo with the choir well into her 90’s. Mother was also a gifted quilter. When our parents retired from leading the church in Scarborough, they were invited to lead a small house church in Kingston, Ontario. It is there that mom became involved with the Women’s Prison introducing a quilting group there. While in Kingston she also volunteered in a hospice for 10 years.
Mom returned to Cambridge for the last chapter of her life. She and John moved into the former house of her father, and in retirement, along with her quilting and volunteering, they became expert gardeners. With the passing of her husband, Mom moved to Fairview Home where she enjoyed a rich and active life. Ruth was predeceased by her granddaughter Nicole Willows, and is survived by her children Mary Lou, John Orley, Doreen Elizabeth, Rhonda Janette and her grandchildren Jeffrey and Erika.
We are grateful for the wonderful care and attention shown to our mother in the last years of her life. There are so many people who showed her kindness and thoughtfulness, but we especially want to thank the many staff at Fairview (and, in her last weeks, at Trinity Village) and the church community at Wanner Mennonite Church. We will share in the celebration of Ruth’s life in a service on Sunday, May 7 at 3pm at Preston Mennonite Church. All are welcome.
Donations to Fairview Retirement Home, Wanner Mennonite Church or MCC in lieu of flowers are gratefully accepted.
