Russell (Russ) LeRoy Younger, 81, passed away peacefully on June 17th, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 23rd, 1943 to Roy and Freda (Scott) Younger in Nampa, Idaho.
An avid outdoorsman and nature enthusiast, Russ found solace and joy in the beauty of the backcountry. In the earlier years of his life, he served as a program leader for the YMCA, guiding youth on hikes through the mountain trails of the High Sierra of Oregon and California. He had a love for music and was involved in many choral groups and enjoyed playing a variety of instruments (guitar, harmonica, percussion) After graduating from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Science in Recreation, Russ served in the US Navy aboard an aircraft carrier during the Vietnam War. After the Navy, Russ worked in the YMCA as a camp and youth director for 6 years, before getting married and moving to Canada (Golden BC) with his wife Ann.
Upon arrival in Canada, Russ set to work to build a log home on the quarter-section of land they had purchased and developed a back-country ski business which ultimately led to the construction of Purcell Mountain Lodge.
Russ contributed tremendously to the community of Golden through his dedication to cross-country ski trail building (Dawn Mountain Trails), Golden Golf and Country Club course construction, Golden Dolphin Swim Club coaching, Golf instruction for youth, ballroom dance instruction, and volunteerism (Snow King Festivals, Relay for Life Fundraisers, Jackrabbits cross-country ski instruction) and countless other endeavors. He approached every project with meticulous research and executed them with remarkable skill, drive and dedication.
Russ was a lifelong learner who was passionate about helping others grow and thrive. In addition to his adventurous spirit and professional achievements, he will be remembered for his infectious humor, tireless work ethic, and unwavering belief in the goodness of humanity. His presence will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.
Russ is survived by his wife Ann Younger, son Mark Younger (Debbie Younger), his grandchildren Kolton and Kyron Younger, daughter Kimberly Younger (Paul Bridger), and sister Jan Warner and her children.
He will be forever cherished in the memories of those whose lives he touched.
